Antonio Abad was born
in Barili on May 10, 1894. Studied at the Colegio
de San Carlos. Primarily a Spanish writer, he
wrote fiction, essays and plays. He edited La
Revolucion, El Precursor, El Espectador,
and The Advertiser. Abad won the Zobel
Prize in 1928 for the novel El ultimo romantico
and in 1929 for La oveja de Nathan (with
Flaviano Zaragoza). He won prizes in the Commonwealth
Literary Awards. He was also a professor at the
University of the Philippines where he taught
Spanish. Abad was called ‘el gran novelista
de la literatura Filipinohispana despues de Rizal.’
He passed away in 1970.
