Mauro Ragasa Avena was born in 1937. He enrolled in the University of the East, where he became literary editor of Dawn . Poet, playwright and storyteller, he won awards for his lyric play, The Beads in 1967 (adapted from Amador T. Daguio's short-story "Wedding Dance"), and for another play, Sakada . He was a fellow at the International Writing Program, University of Iowa, in 1977.
His books include Rain and Other Poems (1970), Evening Poems (1971) featuring The Beads , and The Libel Suitors and Other Stories (1990). A bilingual writer, Avena has also produced books in Filipino, examples of which are Ang Tao sa Indoro at Iba Pang Mga Tula (1971) and Tatlong Dula (1983).
