Born in Cebu City on March 27, 1928, Ruperto
Alaura started out as a commercial painter,
having gone only as far as the secondary grades
because of poverty. His "Usa ka Hataas nga
Gabii" (Bisaya) won the LUDABI second prize
in 1961. His other prize-winning stories are "Mga
Pugas nga Bulawan" (Bag-ong Suga), "Ang
Damgo" (Silaw), and "Sukod" (Bag-ong
Suga). Primarily a fictionist, he also wrote verse.
