Fanny Garcia was born
in, what was then, Malabon, Rizal, now Malabon
City. She is a teacher, writer (fictionist, essayist,
scriptwriter), editor, researcher and translator.
She graduated from the University of the Philippines
with a master’s degree, and a Ph.D. in Creative
Writing.
Garcia is a multi-awarded writer in the Carlos
Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature in the
short story, essay, script, and children’s
story categories. Her work was nominated for Best
Story and Best Screenplay for the film Saan
Darating ang Umaga? (Viva Films, Inc.,1983).
Her books include Sandaang Damit at Iba Pang
Kuwento, Apartment 3-A Mariposa St. Pitong
Teleplay (co-editor), Apat na Screenplay
(co-editor), Erick Slumbook: Paglalakay Kasama
ang Anak Kong Autistic. (2005 National Book
Award, Autobiography/Biography Category, Manila
Critics’ Circle and 2005 Book Awardee, Fr.
Miguel Febres Research Award, De La Salle University-Manila)
and Family Album: Mga Piling Personal na Sanaysay/Salaysa.
Her short stories and essays are frequently anthologized
in high school and college textbooks. Some have
been translated into English and Russian. Garcia
is a Professor at the Department of Filipino,
De La Salle University-Manila and resides in Diliman,
Quezon City.
