Bikol literary competition and creative writing workshop to be relaunched in Philippine Literature Portal

Full contest rules of the Premio Tomas Arejola para sa Literaturang Bikolnon, a national literary competition for Bikol writers, and the call for entries of the Juliana Arejola-Fajardo Workshop sa Pagsurat-Bikol, a creative writing workshop, will be downloadable in the Philippine literature portal panitikan.com.ph starting February 6 and 7.

The February 6 and 7 posting commemorates the resolution passed by the Sanguniang Bayan of Pili declaring February 6 as Aldaw kan mga Parasurat kan Kabikolan (Bicol Writers’ Day) and February 7 as Aldaw kan mga Librong Bikol (Bikol Books Day) as advocated by Carlos A. Arejola and the local writing community last year. Arejola is the Southern Luzon coordinator of the National Committee on Literary Arts and the prime mover of the said literary advocacy projects.

The municipal council resolution No. 22 s.2011 was a joint motion of Pili Councilors Augusto Camano and Mercedita Violeta, and was jointly seconded by Councilors Francis Belen and Rogelio Raymund Regondola, Jr.

The Premio Tomas Arejola and the Juliana Pagsurat Bikol Workshop will also be relaunched at the 2012 Pintakasi kan Literaturang Bikolnon (Bikol Literature Festival) on Feb 16 and 17, this year in Pili, Camarines Sur.

The literary initiatives, which have been conjointly awarded the 2007 Mayoral Recognition Award from the City Government of Naga and the 2008 Gawad Pedro Bucaneg from the Unyon ng mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas, will be undertaken this year by the Naga City NCCA (National Commission for Culture and the Arts) Desk thru an NCCA literature development grant.

The desk was set up by the City Government of Naga and inaugurated during the August 5 city celebration of the Raul Roco Day. Housed at the city hall’s Roco library building, the desk is run by the Bicolano executive committee members of the different NCCA national committees, namely Severino Mipa of the Committee on Cultural Communities and Traditional Arts, Mario Resurrecion of the Committee on Indigenous Peoples, Jazmin Badong Llana, Ph.D. of the Committee on Dramatic Arts, Victor Sorellano of the Committee on Cultural Education, Alice Alaurin of the Committee on Museums, and Carlos Arejola of the Committee on Literary Arts. Mipa, head of the Bicolano lowland cultural community, is the chair of the NCCA desk.
