Co-founder of New York Writers Workshop Tim Tomlinson to hold fiction workshop at the Filipinas Heritage Library

How do you begin a story? How do you make readers keep turning pages? How do you choose a perfect ending?

This three-day workshop will teach the basics of fiction writing (structure and elements) through lectures, discussions, group exercises. Written pieces will also be workshopped. Each course participant will learn different strategies and techniques in crafting narratives, fleshing out characters, polishing the descriptive prose, and others. This way, the participant can create not only effective openings endings, but a wholly memorable story.

This workshop is open to both aspiring and advanced writers. There are no prerequisites to join the class. You are welcome to bring finished pieces or drafts for sharing in class.

The speaker, Mr. Tim Tomlinson, holds an MFA in Fiction from Columbia University’s School of the Arts. At Columbia, he studied with such acclaimed writers as Richard Price, Russell Banks, Robert Stone, and Edmund White. While his time at university was valuable, he’s always been a believer in experiential learning, and of writing that comes from imaginative handling of personal experience.

Tim is also a co-founder of New York Writers Workshop, and co-author of its popular text, The Portable MFA in Creative Writing. His fiction and poetry have appeared in numerous venues, in print and online, including The Missouri Review, The Gettysburg Review, The North American Review, The New York Quarterly, Pank, the Asia Writes Project, and Salt River Review. Tim has been running workshops since 1991, and he's taught or consulted in the US, the UK, Italy, Thailand, Singapore, and China.

The workshop fee is P4,000 for all classes, inclusive of handouts, materials, snacks, and a certificate. A nonrefundable down payment of P1,000 is required to reserve a slot. The deadline for reservations is on January 23, 2012.

A 5-percent discount will be given to those who pay in full and in cash on or before the deadline. A 10-percent discount is given to all Acentive members. You may pay in cash, check, or through credit card.

Proceeds of this workshop will benefit the literacy projects of the Filipinas Heritage Library, including the development of community libraries, book donations for libraries, and training teachers and librarians all over the country.
