UP Press Launches New Book by
Two National Artists
Journey into the strange biblical
landscape of Sonetos Postumos . Strewn
with relics of the past, it is also scattered
with keys and clues to looking at the present
and contemplating the future. Between "breath
and death," desert and crumbling city, Jericho
and Gethsemane, the Bible can speak like the Tibetan
Book of the Dead, John the Baptist might meet
Dante, and Florante and Lam-Ang could encounter
Plato, Nietzche or Alejandro G. Abadilla.
Explore, too, the visual experience
of Sonetos Postumos . This new compelling
collection by National Artist for Literature Virgilio
S. Almario (Rio Alma) is counterpointed with the
stunning art of the late Ang Kiukok, National
Artist for the Visual Arts.
Sonetos Postumos is the latest
book published by the University of the Philippines
Press (UPP). It collects within its full-color
pages the poetry of Almario in Filipino, the translation
into English by Marne Kilates, and paintings by
Ang. The book is part of the special collection
of books published by the UPP in celebration of
the upcoming centennial of the University of the
Philippines.
Virgilio Almario, or Rio Alma,
as he is known by the nom de plume he uses for
his poetic works, was named National Artist for
Literature in 2003. After Ka Amado V. Hernandez,
he is so far the only other literateur writing
in Filipino to be so honored. As a poet, literary
historian, and critic, he has 25 books of poetry
and literary criticism to his name. He is currently
Dean of the College of Arts and Letter of UP Diliman.
Marne Kilates writes his poetry
in English but devotes special attention to writing
in Filipino as translator. He was the SEA WRITE
awardee in 1998, and has won several Palanca prizes
for poetry and the National Book Awards.
Ang Kiukok, son of Chinese immigrants,
pre-eminent cultural star of the Filipino-Chinese
community, has crossed national boundaries with
his work (his paintings are a regular feature
in the auction houses of Sotheby's and Christie's),
but has always remained truly, undeniably, Filipino.
Honored as National Artist for the Visual Arts
in 2001, Ang was one of the most vital and dynamic
figures who emerged during the 60s, and continued
to make an impact on the art scene until the time
of his death in 2005.
Sonetos Postumos will be launched
by the UPP on May 9, 2006 at 4:00 p.m. at the
Cultural Center of the Philippines. Copies of
the book will be available for sale at a 20% discount
at the venue during the launch. The book is available
at regular price at the University of the Philippines
Press Bookstores in UP Diliman, Baguio, Iloilo,
and Davao and at Aeon Books in Katipunan, Popular
Bookstore in T. Morato, Solidaridad, Powerbooks,
National Book Store, and Fully Booked.

The event is free and open to the public; no reservations are required.

By focusing on the body of literature contributed by Bulosan, the symposium is expected to illuminate the ideology, philosophy and vision of an important Filipino mind who valued the idea and ideals of America.
Noted Bulosan scholars are among the panelists, who include E. San Juan, Philippine Cultural Studies Center, Jorshinelle Taleon-Sonza, Rutgers University, Tim Libretti, Northeastern Illinois University, Lane Hirabayashi, UCLA- Riverside, Rick Baldoz, Stamford University, Jeffrey Cabusao, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, Marilyn Alquizola, San Francisco State University, Susan Evangelista of Palawan State University, Philippines and Cynthia Domingo, Seattle community activist.

"Salamanca" launched
The Ateneo University Press and Fully Booked launched "Salamanca" by Dean Francis Alfar, last Saturday, April 1, 2006 at Fully Booked, Promenade, Greenhills.
"Salamanca," Palanca's grand prize winner for the novel in 2005, is a powerful love story that unfolds in the mythical town of Tagbaoran in Palawan, between Gaudencio Rivera, a writer whose prodigious sensuality fuels literary feats, and Jacinta Cordova, whose transcendent beauty ignites passions in the unlikeliest individuals but ironically discourages the townsfolk from bearing children of their own.
Of Alfar's first novel Caroline Hau writes, "this audacious work of imagination takes the reader on a magical excursion into Philippine life and history while setting new standards for the Filipino novel along the way."
"Salamanca" is available at the Ateneo University Press (02-4265984; unipress@admu.edu.ph), all branches of Fully Booked (02-7244057), Aeon (02-9269406), Bound (02-4117768), Popular (02-3722162), and Solidaridad (02-5230870).

The schedule of the UP Film Institute's Advanced Scriptwriting Workshop was moved on April 23, 30, May 7, 14, 21 and 28, 2006 (Sundays, 1 to 6 pm).
Targeting professional screenwriters or teleplay writers, the workshop challenges participants to construct culturally meaningful subjects for their scripts. It has been designed for experienced witers to cover the advanced topics: the grammar of the film narrative, time modes in rendering the narrative subject, blocking designs to structure the plot, rhetorical devices to articulate narrative arguements and various mechanisms to heighten dramatic scenes.
The workshop will be conducted by multi-awarded screenwriter Armando "Bing" Lao, one of the juror for this year's Cinemalaya scriptwriting contest.
