A whole-day event filled with fun activities awaits books lovers of all ages. Find out what makes a bestseller click as Visprint’s Nida Ramirez (publisher of Bob Ong books), National Book Store’ Abdon M. Balde, and Simon and Schuster’s Jennifer Javier talk about “The Making of a Bestseller: What Sells and What Does Not”.

A fan of romance, chick lit, or erotic fiction? Meet and listen to your favorite genre writers Tara Sering (bestselling author of Almost Married and Amazing Grace), Pinoy romance queen Martha Cecilia (author of Precious Hearts’ Kristine), and Beverly Siy as they talk about what tickles the Filipinos’ romantic fancies and the perks of writing for the genre.

Aspiring writers who want to make it big online can also get tips from their favorite bloggers and authors: Kristine Fonacier (Lonely Planet Philippines), travel and food bloggers JJ Yulo (Pinoy Eats World) and Ivan Henares (Ivan About Town); Tweet Sering (author of blog-turned-book Astigirl, and Iwa Wilwayco (Hay Men: Ang Blog ng Tunay na Lalake) will be talking about all sorts of writing one can do online, and how to make blogging, from food and travel writing to humor and journal blogs, a profitable pastime.

Adarna House, the country’s biggest children’s book publisher, will be conducting a Book Illustration Workshop for Kids, from the step-by-step stages of illustrating for storybooks, building storyboards to incorporating different trends and styles.

FIRST MINDANAO WRITERS SUMMIT CONCLUDES IN CAGAYAN DE ORO

THE First Mindanao Writers Summit, a first in the country, was held on March 19 to 20, 2011 at the Capitol University in Cagayan de Oro City.

The brainchild of convener, Christine Godinez Ortega, vice head and coordinator for Central and Northern Mindanao of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (ncca)-Committee on Literary Arts, the Mindanao Writers Summit was organized with the help of Bathalad Mindanao, represented by Raul Moldez and Amelia Catarata Bojo; the Cagayan de Oro Writers Bloc represented by Zola Gonzalez Macarambon, and the summit host, Capitol University.

The summit gathered a total of 41 writers, who either head or are affiliated members of writers groups from Mindanao, and about 15 literature teachers as observers.

Organized without funding or sponsorships, the writers came on their own to, among other things, initiate a network of writers around Mindanao, to share writers problems and resources, and to implement an action plan for the next two years after brief lectures on the “Southern Consciousness” by Merlie Alunan; “How and Why Publish Works by Mindanao Writers Online” by Victor Sugbo; and, “the Significance of a Textbook For and By Mindanaoans” by Servando “Ben” Halili.

The action plan was based on spirited discussions and the sentiments of young and senior writers who represented various groups during the First Mindanao Writers Summit.

These groups included Bathalad Mindanao, Cagayan de Oro Writers Bloc, the Bukidnon Writers Group, the Bangsamoro Women’s Group, the Mindanao Women’s Group, CDO Bloggers Group, the Mindanao Creative Writers Group, representatives from local governments, local media outfits, and academic institutions from Iligan, Marawi, Agusan, Malaybalay, Cagayan de Oro, Zamboanga, as well as writers from Cebu and Tacloban cities.

The action plan included local workshops, forums, establishment of an online journal, the preparation of a textbook on Philippine literature with emphasis on the literature of Mindanao, as well as the organization and the strengthening of a network of writers around Mindanao.

During the opening program on March 19, SEA Write Awardee and novelist Antonio Reyes Enriquez keynoted the affair. He urged writers to be proud of their own, to restore the nation’s self-respect, pride and dignity. Aside from this, Enriquez challenged the country to make the writer “relevant and functional in his community”; as well as to consider the use of” the native language as a means” to promote our traditions, culture, and myths,” for, “to entirely dismiss this is to dismiss [the writer’s] own identity as a Cebuano, Cagayanon, Tausug, Subanon, or Zamboangueno.”

Also present during the opening ceremony were Dr. Luvismin Aves, Capitol University Vice President for Academic Affairs, Malou Jacob, NCCA Executive Director, who briefed the group on the commission, its mandate, and its plans and current projects; and, a number of faculty members from Capitol University, Xavier University, MSU-Marawi, MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology, Ateneo de Zamboanga University and University of the Philippines Visayas in Tacloban City.

At the end of the writers summit, the writers presented a Declaration of Principles based on the group discussions the previous day as collated by Steve Fernandez in the presence, too, of the Capitol University President, lawywer Casimiro Juarez.

Some of these laid down principles were: to organize and to accomplish the collective vision of the groups and members in order to realize their goals in enhancing the conditions of Literature, writing, and writers in Mindanao and the Visayas.

The second Mindanao Writers Summit will be held in 2013 to follow through the planned activities set for 2011 to 2012. These activities include local writers workshops; a forum on aesthetics; a training on research and the retrieval and preservation of indigenous materials and cultural ethics; a forum on translation; forums on audience development and the publication of works by Mindanao writers.

Capitol University (CU), through its President, also expressed interest in making CU a repository and future headquarters of this large group of Mindanao writers.

The writers’ summit ended on a high note with writers promising to make decisions affecting the future of Mindanao writers by consensus in the spirit of conciliation and cooperation.
