LIKE/UNLIKE: FACEBOOK STATUS AT ANG POLITIKA NG AGAM-AGAM CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS
PETA PRESENTS TAGORE'S THE POST OFFICE
PETA's second offering for its 43rd season is "Ang Post Office," a Filipino adaptation of Indian poet and dramatist Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore's (1861-1941) play "Dak Ghar" or "The Post Office." It runs August 6-September 12, 2010 at the PETA Center Theatre in New Manila, Quezon City.
In Rody Vera's adaptation, Amal, the 10-year-old ailing child in Tagore's play, is now named Abel. The role is played by child actor Martin delos Santos , who appears alongside stage luminaries Bembol Roco and Bodjie Pascua. The newly-adapted piece transposes early 20th-century rural Bengal into a modern-day Filipino town.
The production also features a live vocal score from multi-award winning children's choirs, the Kilyawan Choir and the Loboc Children's Choir. Included in the cast are Lao Rodriguez, Ian Segarra, Jojo Atienza, Jack Yabut, Lot Lot Bustamante, Abner Delina Jr., Ness Roque, Jason Barcial, Mary Jane Medina, Josh Tecson, Sweet Ramos, and Julia Chua.
"The Post Office" was most recently staged in New York City by a Bangladeshi theater group, Charanik, with five performances at the New York International Fringe Festival in Lower Manhattan in 2001. The production featured a strong multiracial cast with three different young actors playing Amal--a Latino, a South Asian and a Chinese.
On May 7, 2011, the world will celebrate Tagore's 150th birth anniversary. Tagore, the first Asian who won the Nobel Prize in Literature, is also often referred to as Bengal's Shakespeare.
Gardy Labad directs the show. PETA's "Ang Post Office" has received art grants from the Prince Claus Fund for Culture and Development, National Commission for Culture and the Arts, UNESCO Commission for the Philippines, MISEREOR/KZE, and Zest Airways Inc.

ADARNA HOUSE BAGS 3 OF 6 NATIONAL CHILDREN'S BOOK AWARDS
Last Saturday, July 24, the children's publishing industry gathered at the Mandarin Oriental for the first ever National Children's Book Awards. The NCBA, organized by the National Book Development Board (NBDB) and the Philippine Board on Books for Young People (PBBY), is the first award of its kind — recognizing the country's best published children's books, which include both works of fiction and nonfiction.
Publishers were asked to nominate their books with a copyright year of either 2008 or 2009. And we have been grinning from ear to ear since Saturday because, out of our 14 nominations, 3 of our books were given citations! (Click on the images below to see the complete profile of the book and to read the full citation.)
We are so happy with the NCBA, which gives the awards on an even playing field — without ranking and categories — along with written citations that highlight each book's strength and charm.
Congratulations are in order: to our authors and illustrators May Tobias-Papa, Isabel Roxas, Gidget Roceles-Jimenez, Bru, Becky Bravo and Jason Moss; to the NBDB and PBBY; and to the tireless and awesome judges!

Dumalo at magpadalo!
"Giving voice to victims of violence, the workers, the women, the disappeared, these are courageous love poems that address the paradoxical nature of nation, of struggle, and of the deeply personal. Often in the voice of woman, Barrios' poems are exquisite guerilla forays into the theater of contemporary cultural wars; we emerge from them having learned that love's secret name is justice." -- Sylvia Tiwon, University of California Berkeley
--Virgilio S. Almario, National Artist for Literature
"One of the most influential and major voices in Philippine feminist poetry, Joi Barrios powerfully and tenderly speaks the twin passions of personal desire and social revolt that have propelled the radical national struggles for freedom and justice, in which she has long been an important cultural actor and activist. In bringing together the unforgettable laments and protests, cries of anger and consolation, and songs of love and solidarity that she has penned and performed over the last few decades of feminist and nationalist struggle, Barrios offers us a poignant, vivid and inspiring chronicle of the life force of sentiment that is the hidden and yet indispensable force of political commitment and community." -- Neferi Tadiar, Columbia University
Bien Lumbera, National Artist for Literature
"Joi Barrios' metaphors, images and words attempt to capture the impossible — "bare life" as a Filipino condition. In her lush Tagalog verse, we encounter hopeful lovers, murdered farm workers, grieving mothers of missing activists, Jose Rizal's radical but lesser-known sister, and countless Filipino immigrants. There is love and loss, brutality and beauty, history and memory in her elegant poems that beg to be read in both languages." -- Nerissa S. Balce, Stony Brook University
About the Author and the Translator
Joi Barrios teaches Filipino and Philippine literature at UC Berkeley while on leave as Associate Professor at the University of the Philippines. She has won the Palanca Awards for poetry, drama, and the essay; and was a recipient of the TOWNS award (The Outstanding Women in the Nation's Service) in 2004. This is her third poetry collection.
Mark Pangilinan is a poet and translator currently in his fourth year of graduate study at the University of California, Irvine. He studies translation, postcolonial and trauma theory with an emphasis on twentieth-century literature of both the US and the Philippines. Pangilinan translates to and from Filipino and Spanish, and hopes to complete his Ph.D in the spring of 2011.
