DULAANG U.P. BAGUIO SHOWCASES U.P. TALENTS IN MUSICAL ON CULTURE AND NATION-BUILDING

kb

Dulaang U.P. Baguio (DUPB), the premiere theater company of the University of the Philippines – Baguio (UPB), heats up 2011 with a major musical on nation-building.

Based on the Bicol epic Ibalon, "Sa Kabilang Ibayo,” is DUPB's offering in celebration of U.P. Baguio's 50th Founding Anniversary. It is rewritten in contemporary form by award-winning writer and U.P. Diliman Professor Rommel Rodriguez, and set to music by world music artist and UPB professor Carol Bello. Directing the musical is well-known stage director, media personality and UPB professor Dennis Gutierrez. Veteran theatre artist and UPB alumnus Audi Colongon joins the artistic team as co-director and movement/dance consultant. UPB Speech Professors Christian Fajardo and Shine Queri assist in directing and choreography, respectively. The artistic team is backed by a powerhouse of more than 50 faculty members and students of U.P. Baguio.

Set in an enchanted forest community made alive through an intricate play of lights, movement, music and sound effects, Sa Kabilang Ibayo is a promising stunner. The play revolves around the character named Handiong, a wandering Kudyapi (two-stringed lute) player who seem to have no viable future and career as a musician. In a twist of fate, homeless and hungry Handiong, lands the job as the next person who will try to defeat the Tandayag, the giant wildboar that has been roaming around the Kabilang Ibayo, the fertile land yonder, and killed dozens of hunter even before Handiong came. Chosen by the community elders by mistake, and armed only with a Kudyapi, Handiong searches through the enchanted forest and unknowingly becomes the object of love of the lonely Diwata named Oriol. Handiong kills the Tandayag through Oriol's help. Oriol is cursed by the forest witches or “barang” for helping Handiong, and becomes the four-headed monster “Rabot.” Without his beloved Oriol, Handiong loses all hope and strength to fight Rabot . “Bantog,” a young hunter and admirer of Handiong, takes over the mission and defeats Rabot. The whole story is woven together by the chantress Kadugnung, who follows all the trials and triumphs of Handiong, Oriol and Bantog.

“Sa Kabilang Ibayo fires up U.P. Baguio's commitment to promote Filipino culture and contribute to nation-building; students from elementary to college levels will surely enjoy and learn a lot just by watching,” Dr. Purificacion Delima, Dean of UPB's College of Arts and Communication, affirms.

Sa Kabilang Ibayo will be shown from the 21st  to 27th  of February 2011 in U.P. Baguio at 6:30 in the evening. For sponsorship and ticket inquiries, email <dulaangupb@gmail.com> or SMS/call 09392451256.

WRITING WORKSHOPS FOR THE SERIOUS BLOGGER

blog

The popularity of blogging has declined drastically in 2006 to 2009 due to the deluge of social media quick updates like that of facebook and twitter, but still Matt Mullenweg of WordPress believes that there are still more that can be said in just 140 characters. Hollywood movies may have learned long ago that in order to grab the attention and successfully hooking its audience is just capsulated 10 minutes. But amidst all these, blogging is still all about content and not just simply about 'bragging' and no-nonsense status update. On March 19 and 20 at 2-5pm, Jude Cartalaba, a freelance writer, a PR person and a blogger at the same time will be holding WWW - What to Write on the Web: A Writing Workshop that Works!

Alex Lacson, bestselling author of '12 Little Things Every Filipino Can Do to Help Our Country'; Coach Pia Nazareno-Acevedo, CEO of One CORE and author of 'Born to be a Hero'; Aileen Santos, author of the novel 'Seduction Secrets that Really Work'; and Ulysses King, a fashion designer for metro-masculine and desirable wear will join in this two-day writing-cum-blogging workshop as guest speakers.

Chun Valencia of PinoyFoodWriter.com, photo hobbyist Gerum Quiming of RamblingSensations.com and Lizza Villanueva, and another freelance writer-editor will share the benefits of blogging for today's communication and its impact in the younger generation. Workshop topic includes profitable blogging for business-minded people.

Register today up to February 26 and get a 500-peso off from its workshop fee. Only 30 slots are allotted for the two-day weekend workshop. For workshop fee payment or reservation of at least 500 pesos can be facilitated through BDO savings account number 5630022319 and account name Raul W. Cartalaba.

For inquiries and further details, please contact +639159109015 or email judecartalabaonline@gmail.com.

TABOAN WRITERS FESTIVAL RETURNS THIS FEBRUARY

tab

First organized in 2009, the Taboan International Writers Festival is an annual gathering of writers from the Philippines and other parts of the world.

Taboan is a Bisaya word which means marketplace.

In keeping with its word origin, the Taboan International Writers Festival seeks to be a marketplace of ideas for the Philippine literary community.

At Taboan, writers share their experiences, projects, philosophies, and styles. From this exchange, Taboan hopes to foster new inspirations and new ventures. For veteran writers, Taboan is a reunion of friends and once-familiar faces now dispersed across the regions. For young writers, Taboan is a time to meet mentors, peers, and collaborators.

Now on its third year, TABOAN: The Philippine Writers Festival 2011 will be held in Davao City in Mindanao , the southernmost island in the country, on Feb. 10-12, 2011. The word TABOAN is a Cebuano word meaning “meeting place” or “a place for trading” goods or ideas. It will gather for three days some seventy to eighty national and international writers who will read from their new works, or share ideas about the craft of writing and its future in a highly technological world, and discuss the situation of writing in the regions or in the other countries. International writers, especially from the ASEAN countries will be invited. The festival will feature the theme “Traditions and the New.”

The Festival will have the following components: (1) panel discussions on sundry topics, (2) conversations with writers or writers groups, (3) lectures by writers on topics of their own choice, (4) an outreach—or school visitation— program, (5) a book fair, (6) literary readings and performances, and (7) the TABOAN Awards night. Also, scaled-down versions of TABOAN will be held in Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao , and NCR where the literary word will be celebrated by local groups of writers.

MARK ANGELES RELEASES SECOND BOOK, EMOTERO

EM

Mark Angeles, also known for his cybermoniker Makoy Dakuykoy, releases his 2nd indie book, Emotero.

The book is a collection of 88 100-word narratives inside a story. One day, the main character Karl Mensaje received a package. Its content: a notebook full of stories.

Angeles dares us to step into the labyrinth of the book. He poses, “Is it a collection of stories or a book-length short story? Are the stories drabbles or prose poems?”

“I laid down a handful of puzzles in Emotero,” he added. “Start with the main character. Even the book cover design is an enigma. They are all related. You have to read the book from cover to cover to understand the mystery.”

Emotero tells the tales of a prostitute, a bisexual, a transexual, an embalmer, a magician, a prison warden, tollgate keeper, fortune teller, ex-military, sympathizer and member of New People’s Army among others. Even the stories of a cow, a goat, and a sheep.

Angeles’s first indie book, Patikim, a collection of his notorious love poems has been received well by both the academe and literary enthusiasts. He is a Palanca awardee and an activist.

To order: send an email to akosimakoy(at)gmail(dot)com.

AGCAOILI ENGLISH-ILOKANO DICTIONARY IS OUT

dict

For the first time, an English-Ilokano Dictionary, one of the more comprehensive dictionaries on the Ilokano language, is out of the press. Compiled by Dr. Aurelio Solver Agcaoili, an Ilokano literature and language scholar-activist-writer and President of Nakem Conferences International and current coordinator of the Ilokano Language and Literature Program of the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, the 959-page (excluding critical introduction and other texts) lexicon is a result of years of painstaking and intensive research and study.

The dictionary brings out the repertoire of the Ilokano language as spoken in the Philippines and in the diaspora; likewise, it follows a pre-category approach. Total number of entries in this volume is 18,000 plus.

A companion volume, the Ilokano-English, is being prepared.

The Philippine edition is due for soft launch in March 2011; Another launch at the 6th Nakem International Conference in Ifugao State University, May 23-25; and another launch at the 3rd TMI Global Writers Conference, May 27-29.

The limited American hardbound edition is published by TMI Global Hawaii. To order, email aurelioagcaoili@gmail.com. The Philippine edition is published by Cornerstone of Arts & Sciences (CAS), Quezon City. To order, contact the publisher, Cecilia Suarez, CAS President and CEO at caspublishing010@gmail.com or checheasuarez@yahoo.com, or through 0922-824-3227.
THE BALLADS OF MALAKAS AND MAGANDA: MARCOSIAN AND IMELDIFIC ESSAYS CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

marcos

After Mondo Marcos, we decided to come out with a proposal for a new volume probing Martial Law and the Marcoses. For “The Ballads of Malakas and Maganda,” we decided to concentrate on essays – whether personal or scholarly, critical or even graphic. We also wanted the contributions to dwell on the conjugal cult of personality, or how Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos shaped us and history.

Among the topics already promised are:
1. The Marcos cults
2. The ten most influential TV series during the Marcos era
3. The Marcos films
4. The Marcos epics

We are particularly interested in getting contributions from Moros during the civil war in the 1970s, Marcos loyalists, Kabataang Barangay leaders and those from the other side like the exiles, children of KM and other underground groups, and others. We also wanted contributions about how the Marcos image was sold through the mass media and others. We want to get insider views about how arts and culture fared during the dictatorship. But these are just suggestions. If you read Mondo Marcos, we want a mix of the trivial, compelling, sober, crazy, campy, heartbreaking, sacred, profane, the true, good and the beautiful.

If we get enough contributions, we plan to divide the volume into Ballad of Malakas (Marcosian) and Ballad of Maganda (Imeldific). Our deadline would be on January 15. Essays can be in English, Filipino or both.

Contributions can be sent through email at these addresses:
brutallyfrank@gmail.com
rolando.tolentino@gmail.com

OROSMAN AT ZAFIRA SA SM MALL OF ASIA NGAYONG PEBRERO

ORO

***
Some audience members who are interested in catching Orosman at Zafira who might be a little worried that Orosman at Zafira will be “traditional” and “classic” can rest assured that this production, while still honoring its past and origins, will be exciting and fun.

As a reviewer from the Philippine Daily Inquirer said, “This is not your great-great-grandparents’ komedya.” This particular theater form should not to be mistaken as comedy.

The Tagalog term komedya is derived fromcomedia, a Spanish generic term for drama. Komedya usually have plots about saints or warring kingdoms, and uses staging conventions like structured choreographed entrances and exits.

In this DUP production, “[The] dramaturgs [have] edited the original text, changed Baltazar’s original Turkish kingdoms to Filipino tribes, and created a narrator to help audiences along.”

While the music of a traditional komedya are usually performed by a brass band, Bello’s neo-ethnic music is rendered by a live orchestra using indigenous instruments such as djembe drums, kulintang (gong chime) and kubing (Jew’s harp), together with electric guitars and keyboards.

Santos has replaced the traditional marches with movement vocabularies inspired by the country’s regional dances.

“He marks the narrative with three impressive battle scenes that showcased a heady amalgamation of fight stances and dance. The cast charged, pounced and attacked as they twisted, glided and leapt.”

We’re sure that today’s audiences will enjoy this “modern method” of staging a komedya.

FOR 2011, REP TO STAGE JOY LUCK CLUB AND 39 STEPS

By Walter Ang

Philippine Daily Inquirer

“WE’VE PREPARED an exciting selection of shows that are sure to stimulate theatergoers,” said Repertory Philippines new associate artistic director Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo.

Immediate past associate artistic director Joy Virata will remain as a member of the board of directors. Baby Barredo remains as the artistic director.

“Menchu has been with Rep since she was a teenager and has developed into one of the finest all-around actresses in the Philippines,” said Virata. “She has also become a great director. She is a natural-born, efficient manager. But, most important of all, she is passionate about theater and her loyalty and love for Rep is unquestionable.”

Rep’s 2011 line-up starts off with its “season shows.”

Based on the novel by Amy Tan, “The Joy Luck Club,” to be directed by Anton Juan, features the stories of four Chinese immigrant women and their American-born daughters.

“It’s a great production to start off 2011, especially since it will be from Feb. 4-20, which is great for Valentine’s dates and for celebrating the Chinese New Year,” says Yulo.

Next is a comedy thriller based on an Alfred Hitchcock masterpiece. “The 39 Steps” (March 4-20, 2011), to be directed by Ana Abad Santos, has “over 150 zany characters played by a cast of four.”

Yulo says, “There will be non-stop laughs as audiences witness missing fingers, a plane crash, and some good old-fashioned romance!”

From April 1-7, 2011, audiences can catch the comedy “Shakespeare in Hollywood,” to be directed by Jaime del Mundo. Shakespeare’s most famous fairies, Oberon and Puck, end up on the Hollywood set of Max Reinhardt’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

Smitten by the glitz and glamour of show biz, “they encounter blonde bombshells, movie moguls, arrogant ‘asses,’ and, yes, a feisty flower as they deal with loopy love triangles that end with raucous results,” says Yulo.

Children’s theater

For its Children’s Theater, from Aug. 13-Dec. 11, 2011, Rep will stage one of the most performed shows in America: “Seussical.”

Tony Award winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (“Ragtime” and “Once On This Island”) created the music, lyrics and book of this musical that brings to life the characters from the popular Dr. Seuss books.

“‘Seussical’ is a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza, with all of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, Lazy Mayzie and Jojo, a little boy with a big imagination,” says Yulo.

“The show will run for only one hour and 15 minutes, the perfect length for younger audiences. Children and their parents will enjoy seeing all these characters from the Jungle of Nool, the Circus McGurkus and the invisible world of the Whos.”

2011 yearend big musical

Rep’s past big musicals have included “Sweeney Todd,” “Sound of Music” and “Fiddler on the Roof.” “Peter Pan” will be its yearend big musical from Sept. 29-Oct. 30, 2011, with Sam Concepcion in the title role, to be directed by Jaime del Mundo and Menchu Launchengco-Yulo.

“Join the boy who doesn’t want to grow up, Peter Pan, and his adventures with the Darling siblings Wendy, John and Michael as they battle Captain Hook and his pirates in a world filled with Lost Boys, mermaids, Indians and many other interesting characters,” says Yulo.

With music by George Stiles and lyrics by Anthony Drew (“Honk!” and Disney’s “Mary Poppins”), Peter Pan will be a co-production with Stages theater company.

“It’s going to be a spectacular musical where the actors will fly right before the audiences’ eyes,” she says.

Except for “Peter Pan,” which will be staged at the Meralco Theater, all Rep performances will be at Onstage Theater.

“Meralco Theater is across the street from Robinsons Galleria Mall while Onstage Theater is inside Greenbelt 1 Mall,” says Yulo. “This gives our audiences opportunities to do other things with their families or friends before or after watching our shows.”

Rep marketing manager Rem Zamora said they announced their line-up and show schedules early so that those who’d like to earn extra income for themselves or raise funds for their organizations can plan ahead for 2011.

“The arts can be profitable!” he says. “All our productions are available for showbuying and block ticket sales for individuals or groups.”

“All productions are also available for sponsors who wish to reach Rep’s audiences,” he says. “Enderun College is sponsoring Rep for the entire year. Not only do they leverage Rep’s reputation for quality shows to access our audiences, through their support of theater, they also serve as a patron of the arts. We’re inviting companies or individuals to receive the same opportunities in sponsoring Repertory Philippines that Enderun College is getting.”

Call Repertory Philippines at 5716926, 5714941 or email info@repertory-philippines. com. Tickets also available at Ticketworld at 8919999 or www.ticketworld.com.ph.

While desperate to make ends meet in another country, they also struggle to search for freedom and acceptance.
