Ars Poetica and Rites of Passage Returns

Two of the best plays from last year's Virgin Labfest, Ars Poetica and Rite of Passage, will be restaged at the CCP Tanghalang Huseng Batute, starting on the 21st of July and running up to the end of the month.

Ticket prices are set at PhP 400.00 for regular patrons and PhP 200.00 for students.

Ars Poetica, written by Eugene Evasco and Chris Martinez, and directed by Arlo de Guzman tells the story of two poets: One is the teacher, consummate and antiquated. The other is the student, bold and brilliant. One night, they search for the muses. As the master and protégé try to capture the elusive words, their rivalry threatens to drown them in a torrent of suppressed envy. Who will emerge the victor? Or will their hunger for the ultimate honor of literary nobility drive them to madness?

The production features Soliman Cruz, Ony de Leon and Cris Pasturan in significant roles.

Meanwhile, Glenn Mas’ Rite of Passage is directed by J. William Herbert Sigmund Go and features Acey Bryle Aguilar, Bryan Correa, Nazer Salcedo, Sheenly Gener, Rosswil Hilario, Isabel Martinez, Noel Taylo, Dianne Torres.

Set in a quiet barrio in Antique, the play opens with a painful ritual that propels its reluctant protagonist into manhood. As he is seduced by the promised pleasures of sex, he bravely confronts his past in a bid to take control of his future, and the truth can be as overwhelming as the lurid images of scantily-clothed women in magazines.

For tickets and schedules, feel free to call TANGHALANG PILIPINO 832-3661; 832-1125 locals 1620 / 1621; (0920) 953-5381; (0920) 953-5419; or TICKETWORLD 891-9999.

Womyn’s Night sa Penguin

Iconic Penguin Café/Gallery, the only relic of a once-bohemian Malate, turns into a safe and cozy space for women who just want to chill out, have good (but cheap) drinks and food while listening to alternative groovy and thought-provoking music by today's truly talented crop of young women musicians.

Guys are welcome, too, as long you support or embody these ideals.

Musical performances by Isha (jazz artist from Candid Records Philippines) and Carol Bello Bandidas (Pinikpikan's Carol Bello heads this all-female group with former Agaw Agimat guitarist Teta Tulay, UP-based musicians Dibayn Leaño and Kwame Biasbas, former UP Kontra Gapi member Jhen Gamboa, and Malou Matute who also plays percussion for Cynthia Alexander and Joey Ayala).

Open mic follows. Feel free to read your literature or perform your composition. Got an announcement to make or a manifesto to share? Tara! Sell your stuff and ideologies. It's a grand marketplace of ideas.

Intellectual and courageous wares are very much needed, especially in this day and age.

Entrance fee of PhP 150.00 gives you one free drink. The women behind Komikera comics will sell their stuff. Women-focused/ women-produced works are also welcome. Grab a table and make it your stall. It's that relaxed.

Just email leaflens@gmail.com for more inquiries.

Penguin Café is located at Remedios in Malate (along the newly opened Remedios Circle, look for Changku Resto in one corner. Penguin Café is two doors down that place. Hard to miss.)
