PHILIPPINE PSYCHOLOGY, HISTORY AND CULTURE IN DULAANG UP'S 33rd THEATRE SEASON
In celebration of the centennial of the University of the Philippines , Dulaang UP on its 33rd theatre season, presents new works dealing with Philippine history, psychology and culture. The season will open with a new play written and directed by Anton Juan, Jr. billed as Tagpi-Tagping Pakpak ng Ating mga Anak. Voices of dead children are resurrected in this new theatre piece. Anton Juan returns with this new, tender but searing elegy that recuperates the social conditions of children from document, memory, and Rene Villanueva's texts. The late Rene Villanueva was known to the Filipino literary circle as an advocate for Philippine children's literature. Many of his texts deal with the psychology of Filipino children, showing the angst and pains of children. Tagpi-Tagping Pakpak ng Ating mga Anak will open on July 16, 2008 and will run until August 17, 2008.
Following Juan's new work is Floy Quintos' new musical Isang Panaginip na Fili, based on his award-winning play “Fili.” This new musical features a director attempting to reconstruct Rizal's timeless novel through a new stage version. In coming up with a new interpretation, he is confronted by the novel's characters. He soon realizes that the characters, more than the political images that Rizal depicted, are humans capable of loving and living. Isang Panaginip na Fili will be directed by Professor Emeritus and Dulaang UP Founding Artistic Director, Tony Mabesa. It will run from September 10 to 28, 2008.
As this season deals with history, the third offering of the season, Atang, a new sarsuwela also by Floy Quintos will be directed by the new Artistic Director of Dulaang UP, Alexander Cortez. Atang presents the story of the queen of Philippine sarsuwela and National Artist for Theatre and music, Honorata “Atang” de la Rama. Her story is retold through her love letters to her husband, National Artist for Literature Amado Hernandez and memoirs juxtaposed with the different sarsuwelas she was part of like Hermogenes Ylagan's “Dalagang Bukid.” This new sarsuwela will be Dulaang UP's offering for the College of Arts and Letters' SARSUWELA FESTIVAL 2009, a month long festivity of love songs and musical dramas in February 2009. Atang will open on November 19, 2008 and will run until December 7, 2008.
The fourth offering will be directed by Dulaang UP's former Artistic Director, Jose Estrella who is leaving for the US under an Asian Cultural Council Grant. The play will be announced very soon and will run from February 11 to March 1, 2009.
All shows will be staged at the Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theatre, 2nd Floor, Palma Hall, University of the Philippines , Diliman, Quezon City . Weekday shows are at 7 p.m. and weekend shows are at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Tickets are priced at Php 250.00 but discounts may also be availed of.
For inquiries and ticket reservations please visit Dulaang UP office, Room 136, Palma Hall, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City or contact (+632) 981-8500 local 2449 / 2451 or (+632) 926-1349 or telefax at (+632) 433-7840 or contact Ms. Luz de Luna, Marketing Manager at (+63917) 6206224 or e-mail at luzsdeluna2003@yahoo.com

NBDB BOOK CLUB READS TRAVEL ANTHOLOGYabout OLD MANILA
Relive the days when acacia trees lined the streets of Malate, when Makati was far from being the busy commercial district as we know it today, when Vito Cruz was clattered by tranvias , and Roxas Boulevard was still Dewey Boulevard where people ride the calesa to spend an afternoon in Harisson Park .
Join the NBDB Book Club as they recollect the splendor of old-fashioned Manila in the Book Club's July meeting featuring Anvil Publishing's travel anthology The Manila We Knew , edited by Erlinda Enriquez Panlilio.
Twelve Manileñas reminisce their days growing up in old Manila in what award-winning author Cristina Pantoja Hidalgo calls “a valuable contribution to the lore about every great city in the world – part social history, part myth, and part love song. Manila might be sinking under the weight of problems…; its walls and bridges defaced by ugly posters and graffiti; its hapless pedestrians killed by reckless drivers and ineptly constructed billboards. It will survive nonetheless, because people like the writers of this book will not give up on it.”
Aside from the nostalgic pieces about the different places in Manila , also included in the book are original illustrations of renowned artist Manuel D. Baldemor.
The NBDB Book Club meeting will be hosted by Hooked on Books in Katipunan Avenue , Quezon City on July 25, 2 p.m. Award-winning fictionist Tara Ft Sering moderates.
Admission is free. For details, call the NBDB at 926-8238.
