CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS TO THE MYSTICAL POETRY PRIZE
Download the contest brochure here and here.
The prestigious Fernando Rielo World Prize for Mystical Poetry celebrates its 30th award ceremony this year. The prize, which is promoted by the Idente Missionaries through the Fernando Rielo Foundation, was created in 1981 to encourage mystical poetry and to give worldwide exposure to the works of poets who combine elevated spirituality with authentic literary expression. The Idente Missionaries' Superior General explains:
“Pure mystical poetry is a clear poetical expression; however, we cannot establish its boundaries. As has been mentioned many times in poetical reviews, poetry reflects the image of God in people. So, little by little, in effort to spur people to write this type of poetry, as well as encourage the many authors who have already written such works to present themselves for the prize, we are taking steps in creating awareness about something that exists in each of us and in our culture.”
The President of the jury for the Mystical Poetry Prize underlined that the award is intended for all people -- regardless of their creed or religious tradition -- so that the intimate experience of the love of God can be universally expressed. This goal was upheld by Fernando Rielo, the promoter of this initiative:
“He wanted the experience of union with God to be widespread in a special way among Catholics, but also among all religions, so that this experience of union could be expressed in literary terms, with values that are truly elevated; not only through the classical models of hymns and sonnets like St. John of the Cross and St. Teresa, but also through every type of model, including the literary models of the 19th and 20th century […] When the language used to communicate something implies more aestheticism and greater values -- and when values are expressed all the more-- the better the intimate experience of the love of God will be conveyed."
The prize awarded is 7 thousand euros and the publication of their work; further, the award ceremony has been held in significant international headquarters, such as the United Nations in New York, the French Senate and the UNESCO in Paris, Rome's City Hall, the Gothic Hall of Cologne, as well as the Prado Museum and the City Hall of Madrid.
The last award ceremony was celebrated in the Spanish Embassy to the Holy See, and the prize was granted to Fausto Antonio Leonardo Henríquez, a Latin American Dominican poet who presented “Moans of a Wounded Deer” (“Gemidos del ciervo herido”). His work was selected from among 207 candidates, coming from twenty different countries.
“I thank God because the gift of speech is a gift from Him, and what I want to express through poetry, in this case the piece “Moans of a Wounded Deer”, is precisely the wound I have for God, that is, the suffering that I have because I cannot love God as I would like to, to love Him more and to express it in distinct ways.
Mystical poetry expresses a little the feelings of love, closeness, and trust in the Lord, the moans of the wounded word tries to express this: “Lord I love you, but how can I show it if I am little and limited.
One never fully loves God, never fully expresses it. Therefore, the door is poetry, which gives you the opportunity though symbols and images to create the poetry that forms an image.”
To discover the importance of this award, which addresses not only those who believe in God, but all hearts, we quote the “Transfiguration” poem from founder Fernando Rielo, who in his lifetime invited humanity of all times to make their life the best poem of all:
"You are, Oh my God, the poetry
That we wish to write
And do not know how to.
If you would want to move our finger,
You would be the poem worthy of your name"

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: PHILIPPINE SPECULATIVE FICTION 6
Editors Nikki Alfar and Kate Aton-Osias invite you to submit short fiction for consideration for Philippine Speculative Fiction volume 6.
Philippine Speculative Fiction is a yearly anthology series, which collects a wide range of stories that define, explore, and sometimes blur the boundaries of science fiction, fantasy, horror, and all things in between. The anthology has been shortlisted for the Manila Critics' Circle National Book Award, and multiple stories from each volume have been cited in roundups of the year's best speculative fiction across the globe.
First-time authors are more than welcome to submit; good stories trump literary credentials any time.
Submissions must be:
1. speculative fiction—i.e., they must contain strong elements or sensibilities of science fiction, fantasy, horror, magic realism, alternate history, folklore, superheroes, and/or related ‘nonrealist' genres and subgenres
2. written in English
3. authored by Filipinos or those of Philippine ancestry
Submissions are preferred to be:
1. original and unpublished
2. no shorter than 1,000 words and no longer than 7,500
3. written for an adult audience
In all cases, these preferences can be easily overturned by exceptionally well-written pieces. In the case of previously-published work—if accepted, the author will be expected to secure permission to reprint, if necessary, from the original publishing entity, and to provide relevant publication information.
Submission details:
1. No multiple or simultaneous submissions—i.e., submit only one story, and do not submit that story to any other market until you have received a letter of regret from us.
2. All submissions should be in Rich Text Format (saved under the file extension ‘.rtf'), and emailed to kate.osias@gmail.com, with the subject line ‘PSF6 submission'.
3. The deadline for submissions is midnight, Manila time, November 15, 2010. Letters of acceptance or regret will be sent out no later than one month after the deadline.
Editors' notes:
1. Please don't forget to indicate your real name in the submission email! If you want to write under a pseudonym, that's fine, but this can be discussed upon story acceptance. Initially, we just need to know who we're talking to.
2. If you'd like to write a cover letter with your brief bio and publishing history (if applicable), do feel free to introduce yourself—but not your story, please. If it needs to be explained, it's probably not ready to be published.
3. We advise authors to avoid fancy formatting—this will just be a waste of your time and ours, since we will, eventually, standardize fonts and everything else to fit our established house style.
Compensation will be Php500 for selected stories. In previous years, we've provided contributor copies of the book, as well as small royalty shares, but we are strongly leaning toward shifting Philippine Speculative Fiction to digital format, so we're shifting to outright financial payment as well.
LOST AND FOUND BOOK LAUNCHING AT THE ATENEO
Friday, July 30, 2010
4:30pm - 6:30pm
New Rizal Library Building - Concourse
Ateneo de Manila University
Lost and Found by Rica Bolipata-Santos, published by UP Press, will be launched at the New Rizal Library Building on July 30th.
"In 2005, Bolipata-Santos lost her father, suffered from her son's worsening condtion and found salvation in writing. In 2007, she won the Madrigal Gonzales Best First Book Award for her first collection of essays. The judges called her "provocative and well-shaped essays ... luminous little narratives."
In Lost and Found, Bolipata-Santos continues traveling the terrain of the mundane and the domestic, unafraid to find gravitas in the tiniest of experiences. In these 26 articles she wrote for The Philippine Star, Bolipata-Santos trains her eyes on everyday things, using words to transform the ordinary into something revelatory."
Bolipata-Santos has won numerous awards, including the prestigious Madrigal-Gonzalez Best First Book Award.

The U.P. National Writers Workshop was reformatted five years ago to address a dearth in the mentoring of writers in mid-career. What before was a workshop that honed emerging talent mostly from the nation's universities and colleges, the new workshop now focuses on writers who have already published, or are on the verge of publishing, a book or have won major literary awards. In effect, the new format caters to writers who have moved up from the beginner level.
The UP ICW is the only institution that offers a workshop of this caliber in the country. The function for beginner writers that the UP ICW vacated for the new workshop format is filled by the workshops held by other writing centers from the other universities in the country.
Aside from subjecting works in progress to workshops with the most admired names in Philippine contemporary literature, the UP National Writers Workshop provides a venue for discussion of the participants' respective writing processes. It also allows participants to interact with local writers through special activities organized by the UP ICW and Baguio-based groups. And as an outreach activity, the UP ICW has partnered with the University of the Philippines Baguio to hold an annual public lecture by an eminent writer. The lecture coincides with the workshop and is held in universities and colleges in and around Baguio City.

PETA COOKS UP A CLASSIC
After opening its 43rd Theater Season with a play about children, the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) adds to its menu, a classic narrative that once again borrows inspiration from a deceptively simple subject.
From an enduring work of one of India's most respected Renaissance figures, Rabindranath Tagore, comes a poignant adaptation that focuses on the inspiring story of an ailing child, Abel. Innocent, as he is unaware of what the loss of life means, Abel greets the world with loving and consuming passion through the lone window of his room and touches the lives of people passing outside his window.
Like a bittersweet tale cooked to perfection, Ang Post Office renders a contemporary flavor to the originally Bengali narrative The Post Office. Written and adapted by Palanca award-winning writer Rody Vera, the play transposes early 20th century rural Bengal into a modern day Filipino town.
Tagore's characters are also spiced-up and given new life as they are given their own Filipino counterparts: a taho vendor for the dairyman, a PNP chief for the King's watchman and a sampaguita vendor for the rose seller.
For starters, the play is drizzled with an assortment of both theater giants and budding young artists: Bembol Roco, Bodgie Pascua, Lao Rodriguez, Ian Segarra, Jojo Atienza, Jack Yabut, LotLot Bustamante, Abner Delina Jr., Ness Roque, Jason Barcial, Mary Jane Medina, Martin Delos Santos, Josh Tecson, Sweet Ramos and Julia Chua.
Mixed perfectly through the direction of nationally acclaimed theater artist, Gardy Labad, the play is even richly blended with a live score infused by the Loboc Children's Choir and the Kilyawan Choir. Like a top note to a dish, these young voices echo as each scene is being revealed.
The intimate proscenium stage, like a flawless serving plate, also offers the perfect setting for the play.
Ang Post Office has the perfect ingredients for a succulent play – one that is easy digested because of its simplicity and remembered for its distinctly fine taste. More than being a play about death, it is about affirming and living life and looking at everything beyond their commonness.
This project is supported by Prince Claus Fund for Culture and Development, National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), UNESCO Commission for the Philippines, MISEREOR/KZE and Zest Airways Inc.

FILIPINO POET NAMED POET LAUREATE OF NYC'S QUEENS
By Edmund Silvestre (philstar.com)
MANILA, Philippines - A young Filipino literary genius – author of two poetry collections and four chapbooks (short books of poetry), as well as a playwright, film director, college professor, editor, and publisher – beat out over 20 contenders to become the fifth and latest poet laureate of the New York City Borough of Queens, home to a large number of Filipino immigrants.
Paolo S. Javier, 35, of Sunnyside, was recently installed as poet laureate during a ceremony at Queens Borough Hall. The Queens poet laureate is a three-year, non-salaried appointment. Candidates must have lived in Queens for at least the past two years, had their work published, written poems about the borough and have a clearly articulated vision for serving.
Javier said he did not need a salary tied to the position, and laid out his ambitious plans for his new post, including creating greater visibility for poetry in the borough and helping foster literacy in children by teaching them poetry through new media.
He said he plans to create a roving poetry reading series at borough library branches, bring an international poetry festival to the Jamaica Library, and start a multimedia project that focuses on and includes the people of Queens.
He told the New York Daily News he plans to organize workshops that will teach writers not only how to craft poems, but how to combine them with audio and video components. He also plans to gather local booksellers, writers and performers for a series of workshops and marathon readings.
He said will draw from his experience as creator and editor of an online poetry journal, 2nd Avenue Poetry, as well as his stints in the film industry, theater and journalism.
“This is my way of giving back,” he said.
Describing himself as “a once-global nomad” who made Queens his permanent home because he has “no trouble finding the world in it,” Javier has traveled widely and lived in Asia, the Middle East, and North America before moving to Katonah, New York in 1986. He has been a resident of Sunnyside, Queens, for over a decade.
The newly named laureate, who called himself “a diehard resident and fan of Queens ,” said he has been inspired by the rhythms, languages, sights and sounds of the borough. New York City has four other boroughs – Manhattan, Brooklyn, The Bronx and Staten Island.
“I've always believed in Queens,” he said, noting that without living in the borough, “I would not be able to write the poetry that I've produced. I love Queens so much.”
“I hope to continue the rich and sophisticated history of innovative writers and artists emerging from and working in Queens,” he said.
The idea for a Queens poet laureate was proposed in 1996 by the Friends of the Queens College Library, a volunteer support group, and endorsed by then-Queens Borough president Claire Shulman.
“Our panel of judges appreciated [Javier's] clear and creative vision for promoting a love of poetry throughout multi-ethnic Queens,” borough president Helen Marshall said.
Queens College president James Muyskens said Javier's background shows he “understands diversity.”
“Paolo Javier is truly a 21st century poet who is recreating poetry as a dynamic literary art form that draws from theater, new media, sound art and international cinema,” Muyskens said.
Javier said he realized his love of poetry in the ninth grade in the Philippines, after reading a poem by New Jersey poet William Carlos Williams.
“He showed me how to get inside a poem,” said Javier, who insists he was also influenced by more nontraditional interests, like comic books and the TV show “X-Files.”
He has published two poetry collections and four chapbooks, including his newest, the forthcoming “The Feeling Is Actual” (Creature Press). His “the time at the end of this writing” (Ahadada Books) received a Small Press Traffic Book of the Year Award in 2005.
“I do a lot of my writing on the train,” said Javier, who lives just blocks from the elevated 7 train. “I steal overheard conversations.”
Javier's poems have appeared in various journals and anthologies, and he has given countless public readings, lectures, and poetry performances at distinguished venues in the US and Canada.
Javier holds a bachelor's degree in fine arts and creative writing from the University of British Columbia and a master's in the same disciplines from Bard College. He has also served as a visiting professor at the University of Miami.

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS: KRITIKA KULTURA ANTHOLOGY OF NEW PHILIPPINE WRITING
Contributions are now welcome for the first special exclusively literary issue of Kritika Kultura, the international online journal of language, literary and cultural studies published by the Department of English of Ateneo de Manila University. This issue is intended to be an anthology of new Philippine writing.
The Philippine literary community has a relatively longstanding tradition of releasing anthologies focusing on young writers. However, it can be gleaned that the notion of the “new” remains unarticulated, as recent anthologies simply focus on the “young,” and what becomes apparent is the persistent maintenance of an aesthetics solidified in various creative writing institutions and workshops, a notion that is rapidly rendered inaccurate by a healthy production of writing that these anthologies do not include.
What this issue of Kritika Kultura intends to accomplish is to represent the kind of writing that is rarely published, the kind that is not often legitimized by mainstream publications. The kind of writing that we, as editors, can confidently call “new.”
New, in this case, as the word that most succinctly describes literary texts that are mindful of—by way of formal response/appropriation and/or thematic confrontation—several cultural phenomena such as the preponderance of piracy, the simultaneous/schizophrenic sociopolitical conditions of the nation, the “new” government that includes so many of the old names, the highly provisional stances in criticism pertaining to society and art, the currency and increasing value of topicality and ephemera (as evidenced by BPOs, SEOs, and Facebook), the persistent dominance of celebrity culture, and the gossip paradigm of discourse. The anthology welcomes contributions that transgress genre boundaries, revise traditional modes and forms, formally engage with the largely oral, nontextual/extratextual literary practices of the Filipino audience, and display a technical alertness to the quandaries presented by blog-driven writing, Facebook fiction, protest poetry, the malleability of languages, the hegemony of academic publishing in “legitimate” literature, the dominion of western literary models, and, in light of these, the strategic and arguably fictionalizing construction of Filipino identity.
Contributions are welcome from Filipino writers who have not yet published books of their own. Submissions can be in any language, but English translations must be provided. Multiple submissions are accepted, but each submission (belonging to a particular genre) has a 5,000-word count limit. Submissions must not have appeared in national publications. When emailing submissions, provide a genre-label (such as Poetry or Nonfiction) for each. Submissions may be emailed to kk.litissue@gmail.com. The deadline for submissions is September 30, 2010. The issue will be released in February 2011.
