THE LITERARY APPRENTICE 2010 CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

DEADLINE OF SUBMISSION: AUGUST 15, 2010

1. Who can submit: All current students, alumni and professors of the University of the Philippines System. Although we do accept works from UP campuses outside the NCR, we do not currently have the facilities to edit works in the regional languages. So yes, until we get bigger funding and a wider pool of editors, we can only welcome works written in English and Filipino (er, Tagalog, really). But we trust that that will change someday. Soon.

2. What you can submit: Prose, Poetry, Photography and Artwork. That means, yes, creative nonfiction and short stories are acceptable—we're welcoming of genre benders, works that question our sense of form in Art, our sense of being, and how we make sense of the world with the only facility we can really attempt to do so with—words. For editorial purposes however, we may need to stick to the said labels, but trust that we will read your works and respect whatever label you want to attribute to it, or the absence of it. Oh, and we only take in UNPUBLISHED works.

A SPECIAL NOTE on Artworks and Photo submissions: Please submit in digital format (PNG or JPEG), with a minimum of 300 dpi.

3. How long could/should your submissions be: It doesn't matter. You can send in something as short as a line as long as it makes sense. It's also cool if it doesn't, but you know what we're interested in—works that make us think. And no, we can't publish your novel. But we want to help you get your work out, and we'll do the best we can.

4. How to submit works: Hello, e-mail! Everything is done electronically—send your works to lookingforwally@gmail.com (UP Writers Club is also in on the campaign to save the environment.) We receive enough spam mail so please stick to the ff. rules:

Since we talked about labels earlier, for now, we'll use the following to facilitate the distribution of works to their respective editors. For ENGLISH submissions: FICTION, CREATIVE NONFICTION (CNF), POETRY, PHOTOGRAPHY, ART. For submissions in FILIPINO: PROSA, MALIKHAING SANAYSAY, TULA, LARAWAN, ILUSTRASYON.

Download the official entry form here (.pdf) or here (.doc). This will be the only source of information we'll have on you—no markings of your name should be on the document containing your work. Save the file as TITLE_APPLICATION. For example: The Pink Kulambo_Application.

Save your work with the following format: TITLE_GENRE. For example: The Pink Kulambo_Poetry. If your work has no title, put in UNTITLED, like Untitled_Fiction.

Attach only one form and one work in each e-mail. Yes, you read that right. ONLY one form and one work in each e-mail—that means two Word documents should be attached per e-mail. We know it's a lot of work but you also need to help us out. (It should also be at the writer's discretion not to submit works that just aren't ripe yet. HOW TO MAKE IT RIPE? Join the UP Writers Club!)

The subject of your e-mail should contain the genre of your work. (Or rather, temporary label.) Simply put in POETRY, CNF, FICTION, PHOTOGRAPHY, ARTWORK. Or, for entries in Filipino: PROSA, MALIKHAING SANAYSAY, TULA, LARAWAN, ILUSTRASYON.

5. How long will the wait be: The editors of the Literary Apprentice have full-time involvement in the academe—that is, we are students, most of us currently writing our theses; and although sometimes we seek advice from guest editors (professors, usually), we have lots of things on our plates. The editorial process will take at least three months, the publication, a lot longer, so we need you to be a little patient with us, and maybe even occasionally offer us fruit and refreshments when we cross paths at one of the UP's corridors. We will get back to you as soon as we can, and yes, we will send you notice even if we can't take in your work for the current issue.

6. What's in it for you: A chance to get involved in something really worth doing, that will matter for generations to come—well, that's the showbiz answer. But really, what's there for you to lose save for a few months of waiting for some snobbish editor to e-mail you back? You give us your best work, you give us the best of what UP students have to offer, and we'll help you get your stuff out.

Plus, it's really cool to see your name etched on something that looks like it could've been bought from National Bookstore.

CHERIE GIL STARS IN MASTER CLASS

Terrence McNally's Master Class was first produced by the Philadelphia Theatre Company in March 1995; it opened at the Golden Theatre in New York City in November of the same year. The play is based on a series of master classes given by the renowned opera singer Maria Callas at the Juilliard School of Music in New York in 1971 and 1972. Callas (1923–77), was the greatest dramatic soprano of her generation and also a controversial figure. Her restless and tempestuous personality often led her into disputes with opera managements and feuds with rival singers. However, she was adored by her fans and was the subject of constant media attention, including gossip about her jet-set life with the wealthy Greek shipowner Aristotle Onassis. Greatly admired by many opera fans, disliked by others, Callas was a controversial artist. Her supporters called her "La Divina" and raved about the dramatic intensity and ravishing portrayals she brought to the opera stage. Callas' detractors believed that she regularly pushed her voice beyond its natural limits, achieving her dramatic effect at the expense of beauty of tone.

Although Master Class does delve into the triumphs and tragedies of Callas's life, its primary focus is the art of dramatic singing. As McNally's fictional version of Callas teaches her class, she explains to her students, two sopranos and a tenor, just what it takes to invest the music with real feeling, revealing as she does so how demanding the profession of opera singing is. She also reveals her own contradictory personality—proud and egotistical yet also vulnerable and self-pitying. In spite of all the flaws of its main character, however, Master Class, written by a man who has been a Callas fan since he was a teenager in high school, is a tribute to the dedication of a great singer and actress to her chosen art. Although the play touches on many of the main events of Maria Callas' life, it is not in essence a biographical portrait. Rather, it is an exploration of the nature of artistic creation, as applied to operatic singing and acting. Maria makes clear that art is serious business that cannot be done by half measures; it demands total commitment on the part of the singer/actress. Being an opera singer can never be an easy career; the singer must give everything to the demands of her craft. This means intense discipline over a lifetime.

Witness one of Philippine cinema's living legends CHERIE GIL in a very rare performance as the opera icon Maria Callas. Asked what made her agree to portray a very difficult and controversial role? “I read the script over and over and constantly ask myself what I got myself into? Maria Callas is larger than life and always known to be the epitome of discipline, having an intense passion and love for her art. I was compelled to get to know her though I knew it would be a very difficult show to fill. Perhaps, I personally was looking into seeing my own art through her eyes and finding a fresh start to loving my craft all over again.” says Cherie.

MASTERCLASS will run at the Carlos P. Romulo Theater, RCBC Plaza with 10 performances on July 29, 30, 31, August 6, 7, 8, 12,13, 14 and 15, 2010. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3:30 p.m.

FOUR THEATER GIANTS, ONE BIG ROLE

They are the kings and queens of the spotlight. Over the years, these gurus have conquered the stage with much ardor. Nonie and Shamaine Buencamino are both known actors in TV, film and theater, Maribel Legarda is PETA's Artistic Director and a formidable theater director as well, Melvin Lee is both a theater actor and director. Having built careers that are worth numerous awards, excellent reviews from critics and the never ending oohs and aahhs from people who've seen their works, it seems that these four names have done and mastered theater from A-Z (and back again). Well, these experts just won't stop putting us in awe. They once took the challenge of the stage and camera, this time, they shall dare to conquer the dance floor!

This Saturday, the PETA Theater Center concludes EAST WEST DANSE, a three-week series of refreshing local and international performances with Agnes Locsin's Sayaw, Sabel.

Sayaw, Sabel is a collection of dances depicting how Filipinos go through life in the midst of all their troubles and tribulations with shining resilience. A piece inspired by Ben Cabrera's painting, Sabel.

The character Sabel in this newest creation of Locsin reflects the different struggles of every Filipino. These struggles are then translated into solo dance pieces which are weaved and transitioned by Sabel – a character based on the woman Ben Cab saw in the street where he used to live. A desolate soul that would remind one of Jose Rizal's character in his novel, Noli Me Tangere – Sisa.

Reserve your seats and witness a FIRST in the theater scene! Watch Sayaw, Sabel at the PETA Theater Center on June 26, 2010 at 2pm or 7pm. Performing Sabel are Maribel Legarda and Melvin Lee. Tickets are available at P300. For reservations, call the Marketing and PR Office at 725 6244, 410 0822, 0916 5805153, 0917 8044428.

A GRANARY OF POEMS ABOUT BICOL FARMERS

CANAMAN, Camarines Sur—A newly published compilation of Bicol poetry offers poems like grains of rice ready to be harvested and stored in a “tambobong” (granary).

“An Tambobong nin Literaturang Bikolnon (The Granary of Bicol Literature)” is a venue for aspiring poets to have their works published alongside award-winning writers from the region, like Abdon Balde Jr., Marne Kilates and Kristian Cordero.

It has more than 50 poems from upstart to longtime poets.

“More than to collect literary works from Bicol poets from different towns, the book also seeks to be an instrument in the pursuit of greater identity for Bicol,” said Irvin Sto. Tomas, who pushed for the publication of the book.

Sto. Tomas decided to leave teaching and spend his time writing and gathering poems.

He said he was inspired to pursue his interest in Bicol literature when he read a book by Bicol historian Jose Barrameda about Canaman town.

He was amazed by the works of other writers, urging him to think about publishing an anthology of Bicol poems someday.

Background

The Philippine PEN is a member of International PEN (Poets, Playwrights, Essayists, Novelists) with Centers in some 150 countries worldwide.

The PEN Philippine Center celebrated its golden anniversary in December 2007. Its founding was marked by a national writers conference, the first of its kind after the war, held for two days in Baguio City in December 1958 and attended by distinguished literary people and intellectuals from all over the country including Senator Claro M. Recto and President Carlos P. Garcia. The conference organizer and also Philippine PEN founder was F. Sionil Jose, now National Artist for Literature. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS TO THE PHILIPPINE GRAPHIC

The Philippines Graphic magazine is one of two remaining bastions of breathtaking literature, and for what it's worth, we hope the effort contributes in some measure to our sense of ourselves and country.

The stories that make the cut in our literary pages are about people—their lives and loves, gains and losses—tales that foresee what worlds of wonder lay in store for those who will give an hour or so of reading time.

For in this continuing season of literary tradition that dates back to the editorship of novelist Agustin C. Fabian (1932 Graphic literary editor and editor-in-chief) to National Artist for Literature Nick Joaquin, and the rest of the dazzling company of literary editors of the magazine, even tragedies resulting from the human condition reflect a triumphant beam.

So, write on. The Graphic is waiting for your contributions.

Note: To all writers, the Philippines Graphic is calling for submissions for poetry and short fiction in English. Send your works to litgraphic@gmail.com with a short bio note.

Specs: Double-spaced, 6-10 pages, 8'x11”, rtf or Word2003 file for short fiction. For poetry, one to three poems, double-spaced, rtf or Word2003 file. All submitted works should be previously unpublished. Please don't forget your bylines (We suggest you write your full names, too, for the finance department.)

TENACIOUS WRITING: THE ILIGAN WRITERS WORKSHOP CARRIES ON TRADITION

For this edition of the writers' workshop that had no provision in the beginning, its culmination celebrated with poetry, music, drama, talk, games, laughs, and a lot of food was victory of exultant proportions.

So did the 17th Iligan National Writers workshop (hosted by the Mindanao Creative Writers Group and the MSU-IIT) end on an exuberant note last May 27 after 4 days of sopping 10 fellows with douses of literary and writing erudition.

The flow of support from workshop alumni, friends, enthusiasts, and institutions realized the workshop and profoundly affirmed the belief that the teaching of writing was intrinsic to our wellbeing as a nation.

Certain practices make the character of the Iligan workshop stand out. Major Philippine languages are represented here. Also, proceedings are published (the only workshop in the country doing so), and last year's process packaged in the journal Celebrations: Places and Spaces (ed. Christine Godinez-Ortega) was launched during the culminating event.

Ten fellows writing in English, Filipino, Waray, Hiligaynon, and Cebuano met, learned, taught, argued, and bonded in what was perhaps one of the more memorable, if not unique, workshops for Iligan -- not because the organizers had to scrimp for resources, but because of the curious mix of participants: a sikad driver, a priest, a college freshman who is also a filmmaker, and a Japanese ceramic artist and poet, among others.

From this pool emerged writers who will certainly figure prominently in our Literature, and the most promising of these received the Jimmy Y. Balacuit awards.

Panelists included Leo Deriada, Merle Alunan, Victor Sugbu, German Gervacio, Steven Patrick C. Fernandez, Workshop Director Godinez-Ortega, and this year's keynote speaker, poet Larry Ypil.

The workshop continues to setup writers to their privileged places to allow them their critical views of society. But as Ypil so appropriately counsels the writers: write about place, one's place, because one's familiarity with one's origins firmly grounds a writer to the truth.

LIRA AND NCCA'S POETRY EDUCATION SERIES GOES TO ZAMBALES

The Filipino poetry group Linangan sa Imahen, Retorika, at Anyo (LIRA) and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) will hold the third leg of the “Sining ng Tugma at Sukat (STS; Art of Rhyme and Meter) 2010” in CASA San Miguel, San Antonio, Zambales on May 30, 2010.

The STS is a series of free seminar-workshops on poetry in Filipino in nine towns across nine provinces of Luzon from March to December 2010. Teachers of Filipino from public high schools are the intended beneficiaries. The STS is on its second year, with the first edition being held in 2008 when around 430 delegates in ten towns across Luzon attended.

This year's first beneficiaries were San Fabian in Pangasinan and Baguio City. For STS San Antonio, award-winning poet Dr. Michael M. Coroza of LIRA and Ateneo de Manila University will be the lecturer. Violin virtuoso Coke Bolipata of the CASA San Miguel is the event's host.

The other beneficiaries of STS 2010 are Vigan City, Ilocos Sur; Lucban, Quezon; Bataan province; Naga City, Camarines Sur; San Fernando City, Pampanga; and Tuguegarao City, Cagayan.

The STS 2010 is one of the fifteen projects for LIRA's year-long 25th anniversary celebrations. Founded in 1985 by the National Artist for Literature Virgilio S. Almario (alias Rio Alma), LIRA is the premier institute of poets in Filipino. In pursuance of its mission of enriching and promoting Filipino poetry, the organization holds a yearly five-month-long poetry clinic held for the most part in UP Diliman. The STS 2010 is an effort to bring part of this clinic outside of Metro Manila.

The project directors are Phillip Kimpo Jr., president of LIRA, and Beverly W. Siy, immediate former president and creator of the STS. The overall project coordinators are Mariane A.R.T. Abuan and Deborah Rosalind D. Nieto, while Vivian N. Limpin is the local coordinator for STS San Antonio. To contact the STS team, email them at pamunuan@liraonline.org.
