CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS TO PAPER MONSTER PRESS'S DREAM POP ISSUE

After
setting the mood with the seductive flair of our "S/Trip-Hop Issue," we
will now be leading you into a lovely afterglow with the "DREAM POP
ISSUE."
Melodies
taking you on an out-of-body experience; rhythms wrapping you up in a
blanket of spacious soundscapes; and voices resonating like an
echo-laden remix of your favorite bedtime lullaby. Dream Pop is the
kind of music that keeps you awake yet under the sheets in a trancelike
state at any hour of the day. It is atmospheric and ethereal ... And
that is precisely what Paper Monster's fourth issue is all about.
It
may seem like such an underground subgenre, but in fact, Wikipedia has
its own looong alphabetical list of dream pop artists. If you can get
an aural picture of Kevin Shield's (My Bloody Valentine) indulgence for
delayed and distorted guitar effects with Elizabeth Fraser's (Cocteau
Twins) or Hope Sandoval's (Mazzy Star) sleepy-eyed vocals; and Anthony
Gonzalez's (M83) blurry and up-front synthesizer tones, then it's quite
easy to catch our drift.
Once
again, we are calling all literary, visual and sound artists to give us
their personal interpretations of DREAM POP in the form/s of:
LITERARY
ART: We accept poetry, literary essays, critical essays, microfiction,
reviews of Paper Monster Press issues 1-3, and ekphrasis works. VISUAL
ART: We accept new media art, installation art, abstract expressionism,
lowbrow, graffiti, body art, pop art, photography etc. (any kind of
visual art, basically). SOUND ART: We accept sounds that embody dream pop. Think spacious, ambient, steady, atmospheric, ethereal.
GENERAL GUIDELINES:
- All works must be submitted to papermonsterpress@yahoo.com.
- Each
contributor may submit 3 works ONLY from each category. That means you
may submit 3 literary works, 3 artworks, and 3 musical pieces, but no
more than that. This is to give space and a chance to others.
- Submissions must be loosely/closely based on the dream pop genre of music.
- The
EIC’s laptop is Buddhist, so aside from attaching text submissions,
kindly paste the contents of your piece to the body of your e-mail.
- Submit
literary pieces in English or Filipino. We do not have the capacity to
read and/or translate foreign languages as well as local dialects at
the moment. Works should not exceed 500 words.
- Submit
artworks in JPEG format. We accept both colored and black or white art,
but please be reminded that PMP will only have a colored cover, the
rest of the zine will be in black and white.
- Submit sounds in MP3 format.
- If your piece is inspired by a dream pop artist/work, kindly state the artist/work from which your piece sprang from.
- PMP
religiously follows the process of selecting and editing. We stand by
our editors’ decisions. Please, don’t feel bad if your work wasn’t
selected for an issue. There’s going to be lots more of Paper Monster
Press in the future.
- For updates, just check the Paper Monster Press Facebook page (www.facebook.com/papermonsterpress).
Deadline for this issue: JUNE 30, 2011 Ladies and gentlemen, let us now get ready to float in space...

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS TO PSF 7
Editors
Alex and Kate Osias invite you to submit short fiction for
consideration for the highly commended Philippine Speculative Fiction
volume 7.
Philippine Speculative Fiction is a yearly anthology
series, which collects a wide range of stories that define, explore,
and sometimes blur the boundaries of science fiction, fantasy, horror,
and all things in between. The anthology has been shortlisted for the
Manila Critics’ Circle National Book Award, and multiple stories from
each volume have been cited in roundups of the year’s best speculative
fiction across the globe.
First-time authors are more than welcome to submit; good stories trump literary credentials any time.
Submission Guidelines
1.
speculative fiction—i.e., they must contain strong elements or
sensibilities of science fiction, fantasy, horror, magic realism,
alternate history, folklore, superheroes, and/or related ‘nonrealist’
genres and subgenres
2. written in English
3. authored by persons of Philippine ethnicity and/or nationality
Submissions are preferred to be:
1. original and unpublished
2. no shorter than 1,000 words and no longer than 7,500
3. written for an adult audience
In
all cases, these preferences can be easily overturned by exceptionally
well-written pieces. In the case of previously-published work—if
accepted, the author will be expected to secure permission to reprint,
if necessary, from the original publishing entity, and to provide
relevant publication information.
Submission details:
1.
No multiple or simultaneous submissions—i.e., submit only one story,
and do not submit that story to any other publishing market until you
have received a letter of regret from us. We don’t mind if you submit
to contests.
2. All submissions should be in Rich Text Format
(saved under the file extension ‘.rtf’), and emailed to kate.osias at
gmail.com, with the subject line ‘PSF7 submission’.
3. The
deadline for submissions is midnight, Manila time, September 30, 2011.
Letters of acceptance or regret will be sent out no later than one
month after the deadline.
Editors’ notes:
1.
Please don’t forget to indicate your real name in the submission email!
If you want to write under a pseudonym, that’s fine, but this can be
discussed upon story acceptance. Initially, we just need to know who
we’re talking to.
2. If you’d like to write a cover letter with
your brief bio and publishing history (if applicable), do feel free to
introduce yourself—but not your story, please. If it needs to be
explained, it’s probably not ready to be published.
3. We advise
authors to avoid fancy formatting—this will just be a waste of your
time and ours, since we will, eventually, standardize fonts and
everything else to fit our established house style.
There will
be compensation for selected stories, but we’ve yet to determine
exactly what. In previous years, we’ve provided contributor copies of
the book, as well as small royalty shares, but we are considering
shifting Philippine Speculative Fiction to digital format, so we may be
shifting to outright financial payment as well.
For
inquiries and submissions. please contact the editor at
kate.osias@gmail.com or log on to their website
http://philippinespeculativefiction.com/ for more details.
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS TO KRITIKA KULTURA ISSUE ON PHILIPPINE LITERATURE IN SPANISH

To
the rare extent to which Philippine literature in Spanish is recognized
to exist, the tradition is almost entirely identified with the life and
oeuvre of José Rizal, the late-19th century author of the novels Noli
me tangere and El filibusterismo and the poem “Mi último adiós.” The
appearance of Filipino fiction and poetry in Spanish precedes Rizal,
however, and creative publications in other genres as well thrived in
diverse and continuous ways for many decades thereafter.
In
the past century, a scattering of published surveys and graduate theses
has sought to describe the key authors and texts of Philippine
literature in Spanish, but virtually no sustained analytical
scholarship on particular literary works, outside those by Rizal, has
been produced. The object of this Forum Kritika is to encourage the
creation of such a critical corpus and thereby initiate long-lasting
investigations into the tradition, perhaps the most unknown in the
Spanish-speaking world and among all Asian literatures in Western
languages.
Kritika
Kultura will publish four to six papers on Philippine literature in
Spanish in the August 2012 or February 2013 issue. All topics on
specific texts of the tradition are welcome, but in order to diversify
the existing range of scholarship, authors are urged to submit essays
that do not focus exclusively on Rizal. Theoretical and/or comparative
approaches to texts are particularly welcome, as are essays on any
literature, defined broadly, produced in Chabacano in any of its
variants (Zamboangueño, Caviteño, Ermitaño, etc.).
All
submissions will be subject to peer review. Essays should be
5,000-7,000 words long and submitted as a Word document to Adam
Lifshey, guest editor of this Forum Kritika, at AML58@georgetown.edu by
February 1, 2012. An abstract of 250-400 words should accompany each
submission. Regarding style and format, all essays should follow the
guidelines of the most recent MLA handbook.
Kritika
Kultura is a refereed electronic journal of the Ateneo de Manila
University and is available at http://kritikakultura.ateneo.net.
