Katext Mo sa Katotohanan week two winners
The Filipinas Institute of Translation, Inc. (FIT) announces the second week winners of “Katext Mo Sa Katotohanan” (Your Text Mate For Truth) text poetry writing contest.
Chaired by National Artist for Literature Virgilio S. Almario, the judges who include Vim Nadera, and Joey Baquiran chose the Gervacio poem for its amusing yet rueful take on the widespread Filipino practice of buying pirated and cloned products.
Payreted ang dvd ko,
iPhone ay gawa ng Tsino;
pero maniwala kayo,
hanap pa rin ay totoo.
-German Gervacio
By using the sms vocabulary, acrostics, and most of all humor, the other winning poems evade the didactic tendencies of most of the entries. By doing so, these texting poets are modernizing the traditional and strict mode of the dalit (quatrain of monorhyming eight syllabic lines).
May A-B-Z-T-E-F-G
Sa alpabeto ni Neri,
Walang I-O-U-P-S-G
Kung RP sa ‘yo’y 1-4-3.
-Mario C. Lamar
N-apakasinungaling mo
E-hemplo ka ng demonyo
R-imarim kami sa iyo
I-siwalat ang totoo.
-Tata Raul Funilas
Bata ni Ma’m iwas-pusoy;
Bakit takot sa Senado?
Matulad ba kay Pinokyo
At humaba rin ang ilong?
-Fernando Gonzalez
Di bubukol kung di ukol.
Pero ang mga komisyon
Sa kontrata’y bumubukol
Sa bulsa ng mga baboy.
-Alexander Martin Remollino
Thousands of texters sent entries via sms cellphone technology from as far away as Hongkong and Guam. Hundreds more opted to use the email.
FIT encourages more texters to join this contest which has a very contemporary theme—the value of telling the truth. Non-winning entries from previous weeks do not qualify anymore for consideration for the current week. The contest skips the Holy Week and will resume by March 24 until April 4, 2008.
Contestants can text their poems at 0915-7832810. Or email them at dalitext@yahoo.com. Poems must strictly follow the dalit rhyme and meter. Cut-off time is at 5pm every Friday. Weekly winners gets a prize of P2,000.00 Consolation prize winners will receive certificates. For details, call 9221830 or email at mentioned address.

Success for Pagpupugay 2008
by Arvin Abejo Mangohig
On its second year, Ang Pagpupugay sa Pambansang Alagad ng Sining was once again successful. Bringing the five living National Artists for Literature to various cities across the country, Pagpupugay is the centerpiece program of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts’ Philippine Arts Festival. The brainchild of UP Institute of Creative Writing Center director Vim Nadera, it aims to bring our great writers closer to the reading public.
Edith Tiempo, the first and only female National Artist for Literature, spoke at the Marcelo B. Fernan Cebu Press Center, DECS Compound, Lahug Cebu City on February 7. Her lecture was entitled “Enhancing the Poetic” and the Cebu Arts Council “performed” some of her poems for the audience composed mainly of students and teachers.
Virgilio S. Almario went to the UP Visayas Auditorium and spoke on “Sino ba ang Filipino?” The February 13 lecture also featured a performance of UP CAL Dean Almario’s poems by students of the UP Visayas. An audience estimated at 1,000 was there for the rare treat.
The University of Makati Grand Theater saw Alejandro Roces gracing its halls on February 20. Mr. Roces spoke on music and the audience was fortunate to enjoy the performance of UST Lithurgikon Choir.
UP ICW Board of Advisers member Bienvenido Lumbera was hosted by Laoag Ilocos Norte National Highschool. His lecture was “National Artist for Literature Mula sa Rehiyon Naman!” The Dulaang UP performed excerpts from the gargantuan Lumbera musical “Hibik at Himagsik ni Victoria Laktaw.”
Last but not least, F. Sionil Jose visited Ateneo De Naga and spoke on “Literature as Memory, as Ethics.” The CCP Tanghalang Pilipino performed excerpts from Mr. Sionil Jose’s novel Pragress.
The five events were ably coordinated by the UP ICW, also the coordinator of panitikan.com.ph and the country’s premiere writing workshop, the UP National Writers Workshop.

Haiku is a form of poetry that developed in Japan from about 400 years ago. It is a short verse of 17 syllables, divided into units of five, seven, and five syllables. Pinoy haiku has 19 syllables divided into units of three lines having seven, five, and seven syllables each. This fixed-form with rhyming the first and the last lines is ideal for Filipino poetic tradition considering its similarity to tanaga and ambahan in versification.

Milflores Publishing releases new modern tale collection
Milflores Publishing’s latest release is a collection of modern wonder tales titled Tales of Fantasy and Enchantment.
Edited by prizewinning fictionist and essayist Cristina Pantoja Hidalgo, the book brings together some of the most gifted young Filipino writers, in what the editor describes as “the more interesting performances of the modern tale in the country today.” They include modern fairy tales, reworked folk tales, refashioned legends, ghost stories, gothic tales, horror stories, futuristic fiction and fan fiction. The best part of the collection is that many of the stories are not just scary or marvelous, but funny.
Many of the contributing authors are familiar names. Vicente Garcia Groyon and FH Batacan are winners of the Carlos Palanca Grand Prize for the Novel. Prizewinning writers Dean Francis Alfar and Nikki Alfar edit the celebrated Philippine Speculative Fiction series. Marivi Soliven Blanco is the author of several best-selling Milflores essay collections. Tara FT Sering started Philippine chick lit. Ma. Romina M. Gonzalez, Cyan Abad-Jugo, Ian Rosales Casocot, Karl de Mesa, and Anna Sanchez have all published fiction collections and won their share of awards. Emil Flores, Gizela M. Gonzalez, Bj A. Patiño, Jose Claudio B. Guerrero, Natasha B. Gamalinda, Andrea L. Peterson, Carljoe Javier and Samantha Echavez have been published in other books and magazines, both local and foreign.
Most of these authors are UP alumni. Like the editor, Emil Flores, Butch Guerrero and Anna Sanchez are also teaching in the Dept. of English and Comparative Literature of the UP Diliman College of Arts and Letters. Guerrero is also deputy director of the UP Press. The rest were writing fellows in the UP National Writers’ Workshop conducted every year by the UP Institute of Creative Writing.
“These are contemporary fables which weave old legends and wonder tales with the new myths growing out of today’s popular culture,” says Hidalgo, who began writing and publishing her own modern tales in the early 90s with Tales for a Rainy Night and Where Only the Moon Rages.
The book’s cover design is by Mary Mariel P. Singson.
Tales of Enchantment and Fantasy sells for P350 in all National Bookstore and Powerbook branches, the UP Press Bookstore, Popular Bookstore, La Solidaridad, and Books for Less. Interested parties may also email milflores@pldtdsl.net or call 7216431.

Katext Mo Sa Katotohanan first week winners
The Filipinas Institute of Translation, Inc. (FIT) announces the first week winners of “Katext Mo Sa Katotohanan” (Your Text Mate For Truth) text poetry writing contest.
Chaired by National Artist for Literature Virgilio S. Almario, the judges who include Vim Nadera, Joey Baquiran, and Ronald Atilano chose the top poem for its folksy wit and popular allusion that make its social commentary resonate intimately with recent events. This dalit poem deploys cultural tradition to put the tumultuous present in a critical yet hopeful light.
Noon ay bulag na pinya
Ang burukratang Lozada
At nang imulat ang mata
Pati madla’y nakakita.
- Danilo dela Cruz
The consolation prize winning poems were no less sharp and disproving of the corrupt practices of those who wield power. Expressed in tongue-in-cheek humor, truth telling is deemed most important to achieve personal peace and social stability.
Ang magsabi ng totoo
Ay kalaban ng demonyo;
Ang sinungaling na tao
Ay may gloria sa imp’yerno.
- Abdon ”Jun” Balde
Huwag magtago sa saya
Neri, maging totoo ka.
Kakampi ba kay Lozada
O magsusuot ng Prada?
- Frank Rivera
Kuwago sa kampanaryong
Nakadapo sa pulpito,
May diskurso sa kumbentong
Sasama ba si Obispo?
- ”Tata” Raul Funilas
Dear wala akong sikreto.
Tingnan mo pa ang selpon ko.
Naka-save dya’y puro text mo.
‘Wag lang buksan ang inbox 2.

Katext Mo Sa Katotohanan poetry contest
The Filipinas Institute of Translation, Inc. (FIT) launches “Katext Mo Sa Katotohanan” (Your Text Mate For Truth), a dalit poetry writing contest through the popular SMS/text messaging. FIT has sponsored similar contests in the past using other indigenous literary forms like the tanaga and diona.
Dalit is a traditional poetic form consisting of four mono-rhyming lines of eight syllables each. It is highly metaphorical and conveys an insight on human life and experience. Here is an example:
Ang sugat ay kung tinanggap
Di daramdamin ang antak
Ang aayaw at di mayag
Galos lamang magnanaknak.
(When one submits himself to wounding,
The intensest pain is bearable;
When one is unwilling,
Even the merest scratch can fester)
Writers and poetry enthusiasts can join the contest which has a very contemporary theme—the value of telling the truth. Writing poems is an effective way of expressing communal feelings and at this time in our national life, communal action.
Ang tunay na Filipino
Nagsasabi ng totoo
Naglilingkod sa totoo
Ilalaban ang totoo.
