LITERATURE AND LIES: WRITING, WRITERS AND WASTEBASKETS

It's final: The French salon and English pub-themed writing and writers' tete-a-tete runs May 1-5. Venue: Prima City, Dumangas, Iloilo.
Prima City is a three-story commercial building with a pool that's owned by transgressive Ilonggo writer, Peter Solis Nery. Nery is now based in Los Angeles, California.
This is not your run-of-the-mill workshop where participants' works are discussed by a dogmatic panel. We reverse the process: When you come to the workshop you come ready with your own writing method. You talk about how this method applies to your own writing experience. For proof, you site your pieces (poetry, essay, play, blog, art work, etc) as examples. We react to your pieces using our own writing process so we learn from one another. We don't believe nor subscribe to any school of writing.
We have invited two English language specialists to take up issues on usage: Randolph Graydon, from Baltimore, USA, and Brian Daily, a British- Canadian. Their job is to react to how you work with the English language and offer points for improvement. If you write in Hiligaynon, Kinaray-a and Filipino, we have other invited writers to help you with that: Mel F. Turao, Roger Rueda, among others.
Prospect attendees are college students, fresh graduates, young professionals, bloggers, musicians, artists, book worms, nerds, mad scientists, couch potatoes, movie junkies, journalists and English/literature teachers, who want to have a hands-on experience with how writing is produced by writers themselves. The discussions aren't strictly academic as there are readings and performances in between the sessions. Wine, beer and cocktails will be served.
How to join
Send your softcopy originals as MS Word attachment (poetry, essay/blog entry, short story, play and a combination of these) in Arial 14, double space to archprankster@yahoo.com. Please include a 4-paragraph bio.
We accept applications and manuscripts until 12 midnight of 27 April.
Works will be pre-screened. Discounts will be given to applicants whose works show TALENT and ORIGINALITY OF VISION, if not STIR CONTROVERSY.
Admission fee is PhP 600 for students and PhP 1000 for fresh graduates and professionals. Your fee covers drinks, food and reading materials.
For more details, email Mel at archprankster@yahoo.com; or follow baconbriefs on Twitter.

Each year, the Iligan workshop chooses a keynote speaker to deliver his address during its opening program that also features the MSU-IIT resident theater company, the Integrated Performing Arts Group, it gives a quota of five writing fellows per region and it is the only national workshop that publishes its proceedings. PAPET PASYON CELEBRATES 25 YEARS
One more reason to celebrate with the Grand Dame of Philippine Puppetry
When Amelia Lapeña-Bonifacio penned her Papet Pasyon , she wanted to bring together a Filipino cultural tradition and an art that was not homegrown. The result was a play that opened the eyes of children, not only to the art of Asian puppetry but also to the beauty of their own cultural heritage.
An hour and ten minutes long, the full-length puppet play has been entrancing countless children and their parents every year since 1985. Now on its 25 th year, Papet Pasyon still continues to bring the story of Christ's Passion to life with its cast of brown-skinned, flat-nosed and round-faced puppets.
Lapeña-Bonifacio, recently awarded the title ‘Mother of Puppetry in the Philippines' by the U.P. Department of Speech Communication and Theater Arts, believes that, by borrowing and adopting puppetry techniques from neighboring Asian countries (such as the bunraku of Japan and the wayang golek of Indonesia), one can bring to Filipino children a knowledge and awareness of their cultural roots—not only as Filipino children , but as Asians .
“I was apprehensive to stage ‘Papet Pasyon' because the play challenges orthodoxy, starting from the Filipino face, quite far from the tall noses and fair skin. Also, National Artist Lucrecia Kasilag, then president of the Cultural Center of the Philippines , suggested the Little Theater (now the Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino) as the venue for its premiere,” shares Lapeña-Bonifacio, who is fondly called “Lola Amel” by all the kids (and the adults) who have watched the puppet plays. “What I did not know then was how enthusiastic the reception would be to the changes. A German director commented, ‘I don't know why you want to see the Passion Play at Oberammergau , when you have puppets like these. Just look at that face (referring to the Virgin Mary puppet)!'”
The Papet Pasyon of Teatrong Mulat ng Pilipinas will have its 25 th annual run this Palm Sunday, the 28 th of March 2010, 3pm and 5:30pm, at the Amelia Lapeña-Bonifacio Teatro Papet Museo, 64 Mapagkawanggawa St. , Teachers Village West, Quezon City . ADMISSION IS FREE. For more information, call the Teatrong Mulat office at 929.0895, call/text 0918.9032040, or email mulatpuppets77@yahoo.com.
WRITERS AND ARTISTS STAGE PENITENCE ON GOOD FRIDAY
Arts and culture groups led by the Unyon ng mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas (UMPIL) and the LIRA poetry organization will gather at the Plaza Balagtas, Pandacan, Manila on April 2, 2010. The day falls on both Good Friday and the birthday of Francisco Baltazar, popularly known as the revered Filipino poet Balagtas.
Dubbed “Mag-alis ng Dungis ng Bayan: Penitensiya para sa Dangal ng Bayan,” the demonstration will feature writers and artists symbolically cleaning Balagtas's monument, trading in their pens for brooms and rags. The short program will start at 8:00 A.M. and will end before noon.
National Artist for Literature Virgilio S. Almario, a.k.a. the poet Rio Alma will read a proposed cultural agenda for those who are running for office in the May 10 national elections, especially the presidentiables.
The venue, Plaza Balagtas was erected in honor of the greatest Tagalog poet. Born on April 2, 1788, Balagtas penned Florante at Laura, one of the masterpieces of Philippine literature, and lent his name to the art form balagtasan, a debate in extemporaneous verse.
Individual writers, artists, organizations, and members of the media are encouraged to join and cover the demonstration. They should register their participation by contacting the event coordinators, namely Mariane A.R.T. Abuan (0917-9017090), Carla Payongayong (0927-7145539), and Rommel Boquiren (0917-6985037), on or before March 26, 2010.

NATIONAL ARTIST VIRGILIO ALMARIO LAUNCHES BOOK ON CULTURE AND NATIONALISM
Virgilio Almario, arguably the most influential and prolific poet the Philippines has produced in the last hundred years, recently launched his latest book at the UP Diliman. Muling-Pagkatha sa Ating Bansa O Bakit Pinakamahabang Tulay sa Buong Mundo and Tulay Calumpit is a collection of essays brimming with the wisdom of the National Artist for Literature. The ten essays offer his views on culture, nationalism, and the education of Filipinos. On the heels of his very successful Si Rizal: Nobelista (Pagbasa sa Noli at Fili Bilang Nobela), another UP Press title, Muling-Pagkatha is another addition to the growing Almario canon in criticism.
The launch was held at the Bulwagang Rizal and attended by UP Press Director Luisa Camagay, deans Elena Mirano and Zosimo Lee, writers Vim Nadera, Eugene Evasco, and more. Lee gave the first Panayam Bulawan while Asian Center director Mario Miclat provided an engaging Confucian reaction to Lee's theses. Poet Joey Baquiran also gave his personal insights.
The blurb of the book goes: Bakit pinakamahabàng tulay sa buong mundo ang Tulay Calumpit?
Muling-Pagkatha is now available at the UP Press Bookstore in Balay Kalinaw, the UP Press Display Room, and major bookstores nationwide. For orders, please contact the UP Press at press@up.edu.ph, call 926-6642, or visit uppress.com.ph.

UP DULAANG LABORATORYO PRESENTS RISIRIS
UP Dulaang Laboratoryo under the Department of Speech Communication and Theater Arts, proudly presents Risiris, directed by Ms. Donna Rhyse Dacuno.
Risiris is a production composed of two plays Risiris and The Exception and the Rule. It comes from the Ilocano word for contradiction. Contradictions, some say, move the world. It is one of the few things that tie the two together: an intention to run counter to the usual plays and to offer insights into different ideas and even worlds. And in so doing, the play attempts to move the world.
The Exception and The Rule by Bertolt Brecht is “the story of a journey”. A merchant, a guide and a coolie trek through the wilderness. The merchant searches for black gold, riches beyond imagining, and everlasting glory! The others just want to live through it all and get paid. But in the quest for the ultimate prize in the city of Urga, sacrifices and crimes are made. Finally in a court of law - and more importantly - in the court of the audiences' opinion, a decision must be formed to determine what should be the rule and what should be the exception.
In Risiris, an original play, a decision must also be made, about a betrayal. We glimpse a guerilla squad in the midst of a conflict, not just between guns but between dreams. Gerry dreams to be with his love, Melinda, and wishes to leave. But leaving is not a simple matter. Paeng wants him to stay for the dream of a better world that they shared. Sierra also shares that dream and will use any means necessary to bring it about as she is suspicious of Gerry's motivation for leaving. But some dreams are not meant to be.
Risiris will run from March 23-24 / 7pm and March 25-26 / 3pm and 7pm at Teatro Hermogenes Ylagan (THY), 1st floor of the Faculty Center, UP Diliman. Admission is free.

LIRA AND NCCA TO TEACH POETRY FOR FREE IN PROVINCES
The Filipino poetry group Linangan sa Imahen, Retorika, at Anyo (LIRA) and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) will launch the “Sining ng Tugma at Sukat (STS; Art of Rhyme and Meter) 2010” with the first leg in San Fabian, Pangasinan on March 6, 2010.
The STS is a series of free seminar-workshops on poetry in Filipino, to be held in nine towns across nine provinces of Luzon from March to December 2010. Teachers of Filipino from public high schools are the intended beneficiaries, with LIRA and the NCCA's local partners determining the composition of each town's delegates.
The STS is on its second year, with the first edition being held in 2008. In that year, LIRA and the NCCA taught poetry to around 430 delegates in ten towns across Luzon, namely General Trias, Cavite; Dagupan City, Pangasinan; City of Manila; Mauban, Quezon; Subic, Zambales; Taguig City; Quezon City; Pasig City; Angono, Rizal; and Sta. Cruz, Zambales.
This year's first beneficiary is San Fabian, Pangasinan, with the local government unit and the San Fabian National High School serving as hosts. Prof. Michael M. Coroza of LIRA and Ateneo de Manila University will be the lecturer.
The other, tentative, beneficiaries of STS 2010 are Baguio City, Benguet; Sagada, Mountain Province; Vigan City, Ilocos Sur; Lucban, Quezon; Bataan province; the Bicol region; San Antonio, Zambales; and Tuguegarao City, Cagayan. Once confirmed, STS local partners will contact the public high school teachers in Filipino from these areas.
The STS 2010 is one of the fifteen projects for LIRA's year-long 25th anniversary celebrations. Founded in 1985 by the National Artist for Literature Virgilio S. Almario (alias Rio Alma), LIRA is the premier institute of poets in Filipino. In pursuance of its mission of enriching and promoting Filipino poetry, the organization holds a yearly five-month-long poetry clinic held for the most part in UP Diliman. The STS 2010 is an effort to bring part of this clinic outside of Metro Manila.
The project directors are Phillip Kimpo Jr., president of LIRA, and Beverly W. Siy, immediate former president and creator of the STS. The overall project coordinators are Mariane A.R.T. Abuan and Deborah Rosalind D. Nieto. To contact the STS team, email them at pamunuan@liraonline.org
