CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS TO THEPOC.NET
The POC Review, a new online magazine of Philippine literature, is now accepting submissions. We will publish short fiction, creative nonfiction, and criticism in English.
Fiction in any genre is welcome as long as it is compelling and imaginative. Creative nonfiction includes but is not restricted to memoirs, personal essays, travel essays, eyewitness accounts, literary journalism, and unconventional nonfiction that tests genre boundaries. Works of fiction and creative nonfiction should be 2,000 to 8,000 words, but these are not hard-and-fast limits. Excerpts from longer works, such as novels, will be considered as long as they are self-contained. We are open to serialization.
Criticism is broadly defined as essays on Philippine books and literature as well as on writing and reading. These essays include reviews of recently published books, interviews, re-evaluations of neglected works or authors, and think-pieces on the state of literature and its relationship to the culture at large. Unless necessary, critical essays should eschew academic jargon and dispense with critical apparatus. Critical pieces should be some 1,000 to 3,000 words.
Submissions must be previously unpublished, in print or online. Works submitted simultaneously to other publications will be considered, but let us know that you have submitted your work elsewhere, and inform us promptly if your work is accepted for publication. By submitting, you guarantee that your work is entirely your own original creation.
Send your work as an email attachment to thepocreview (at) thepoc (dot) net with “submission:” in the subject line followed by the genre. The document should be a .doc or .rtf file. Please include a short description of the work you are submitting and a brief note about yourself.
We will pay at least 3,000 Philippine pesos for each work we publish. The rights we purchase are these: first and exclusive online rights for one year, the right to place your work in an online archive (though you may have the work removed one year after publication), and first (but not exclusive) right to publish your work in a print anthology.
Our maiden issue should be online in July. We hope to publish new material every week. The POC Review is published by the Vibal Foundation and edited by Exie Abola. Please address all comments and questions to thepocreview (at) thepoc (dot) net. HEIGHTS CALL FOR ENTRIES: KUWENTONG PAMBATA 2010

GAWAD PANITIKAN'S DEADLINE EXTENDED TO JUNE 30

Deadline has been extended from May 15th to June 30th.
The Gawad Panitikang Pangkalusugan is a NATIONWIDE Children's Storybook Writing Competition with HEALTH as its main theme. Entries written in English, for eventual translation to Filipino, are principally geared to bring into light health issues and concepts to Filipino children aged five to ten years old. All Filipino citizens who are of legal age, and are not published authors of children's books, are eligible to participate.
This project not only seeks to raise relevant health concerns to the national consciousness, it also carries an advocacy for literacy and education, even as it celebrates Filipino ingenuity and culture. This project is the first of its kind in the country.
The project seeks to separate itself from current mainstream literature on children's health by opening up this niche to writers who may explore other methods, literary forms (prose or poetry), genres (i.e. comedy, horror, science fiction, fantasy), and approaches in presenting an otherwise serious and scientific topic. It challenges participants to break away from a clinical, straightforward, and sanitized presentation of health, and to mold it in a form that is enjoyable and of interest for its young audience.
In its pilot year, the competition carries the theme: "Tabi-tabi: Exploring Philippine Health Myths". Entries must tackle health myths corresponding to any one of seven categories, namely: Lungs (ex. tuberculosis, pneumonia, cough, colds); Stomach (ex. diarrhea, intestinal worms); Skin/Bones (ex. wounds, lice, warts, scabies, fracture); Brain/Behavior (ex. epilepsy, psychiatric disorders, child development); Fever/Infections (ex. measles, mumps, chicken pox, otitis media, conjunctivitis, dental caries); Vaccination; and Nutrition (ex. childhood obesity). One winning entry from each category will comprise the set of stories which will be published into a series of full-colored picture books.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: DIASPORA AD ASTRA/SCIENCE FICTION FROM THE PHILIPPINES
What with all the hate going around in this country, it's ironic that we Filipinos have lasted this long. We have the Mindanao massacre, the upcoming national elections, graft and corruption, a history of Martial Law, colonization, etc.
But we've also had some good spots: we have Filipino artists and athletes gaining international recognition, the men and women doing their share as part of the United Nations peacekeeping group, OFWs who go out into the world to do a good job in order to feed their families, national heroes who managed to stand up for our country's pride against overwhelming odds and powerful nations, people who do what is right instead of what is pragmatic, etc.
So it may be that we'll last into the future, when we all have jetpacks and rocketships. But what will the future be with Filipinos around? And how do we envision our future then?
Our upcoming next anthology will look into the future (near or far). Will we still be exporting human workers to Mars or to Alpha Centauri? Will we be ruling an Empire of Humanity? Or will we be running a guerrilla war against robots that we've invented as the rest of homo sapiens flee into space in derelict battleships?
What do you think?
(Unlike the previous collections, we're hoping these stories will be focusing on Filipinos as characters or as a race in these stories. As the title implies, we may have the future but it's our future at least.)
“Diaspora Ad Astra: Science Fiction from the Philippines edited by Joseph Nacino & Professor Emil Flores” will be published electronically to make this collection of stories available to a wider international audience. Through this anthology we will be able to show the world that the Filipino writer can create worlds with the best of them.
Submission Guidelines:
1. As works of the imagination and speculative fiction, the theme is the title: ‘Diaspora Ad Astra'. Works of Science Fiction will be preferred.
2. Stories must cater to an adult sensibility. However, if you have a Young Adult story that is particularly well-written, send it in.
3. Stories must be written in English.
4. Stories must be authored by Filipinos or those of Philippine ancestry.
5. We will accept only original unpublished stories.
6. First time authors are welcome to submit. Good stories trump literary credentials anytime.
7. No multiple submissions. Each author may submit only one story for consideration. No simultaneous submissions. Authors should not have their stories under consideration to other publications at the time of the submission and consolidation period.
8. Each story's word count must be no more than 7,500 words.
9. All submissions must be in Rich Text Format (.rtf – save the document as .rft on your word processor) and attached to an email to this address: estranghero@gmail.com. Submissions received in any other format will be deleted unread.
10. The subject of your email must read: DAA Submission: (title) (word count); where (title) is replaced by the title of your short story, without the parentheses, and (word count) is the word count of your story, without the parentheses. For example – DAA Submission: The Constellation of Marcos 4500.
11. All submissions must be accompanied by a cover letter that includes your name, brief bio, contact information, previous publications (if any).
12. Deadline for submissions is July 31, 2010. After that date, final choices will be made and letters of acceptance or regret sent out via email.
13.This anthology will be made available online. Target publishing date is ___ 2010.
14. Compensation is Php500 for every accepted story.
Kindly help spread the word. Feel free to cut and paste or link to this on your blogs or e-groups – and send your story in.
