Amando Doronila

Essay in English

For his consistently percipient reporting on and ready analyses of politico-historical events in the Philippines, Asia, and the world, whose breadth and depth of insight and relevance which he brought before the public's daily consciousness for the past half-century cannot be denied or diminished. He has always demonstrated an independent and ethical mind, which journalists and writers in general are called upon to emulate and sustain during a time of intervention from foreign interests and from those in power. Truly his writing has served the interest of the Filipino, as well as his country's nationalist aspirations and those of its regional neighbors.

Born on 6 February 1928 in Dumangas, Iloilo . Married to Lourdes Silverio with whom he has three children: Augustine, Maria Lourdes, and Andrew. He took Bachelor of Business Administration, Economics major, University of the East (1953), and Master of Arts in Politics (1990), Monash University, Canberra, Australia. He is currently a columnist and editorial consultant of the Philippine Daly Inquirer; Editor, Public Policy, 1999-2001; Editor-in-Chief, Manila Chronicle, 1956-1993; Columnist and reporter, The Daily Mirror, 1963-1872; Correspondent Washington Evening Star, 1969-1972; Columnist and reporter, Manila Daily Bulletin, 1953-1963. His numerous publications include the book Afro-Asia in Upheaveal: A Memoir on Front-line Reporting (Anvil 2009); The Fall of Joseph Estrada, The Inside Story (2001); and The State, Economic Transformation and Political Change in the Philippines : 1945-1972 (1992). He wrote incisive articles like "The Transformation of Patron-Client Relations and Its Political Consequences in Post-war Philippines" (1985); "The Media After Marcos" (1983); "The Collapse of the Marcos Regime" (1986); and "The Media and Democratization in Asia, The Philippine Case" (1990). He was Visiting Fellow (2004-2007), Department of Political Science, Australian National University; American Press Institute at Columbia University, New York (1971). He was awarded with The Manila Rotary Club Hall of Fame (2003) as Journalist of the Year (1967 and 1989); the CMMA Hall of Fame for winning the Best Analysis Awards in 1987-1989; Chino Roces Freedom Award (2002); and the prestigious French National Order of Merit (1998).

Thelma B. Kintanar

Under her nurturing guidance and tutelage, and using a broad and deep understanding of literature as an instrument of change in consciousness as much as in one's humanity, she opened young and scholarly minds to the feminist world view, which is all the more meaningful in the field of culture as it plumbs the wealth of Filipino experience, and even more, that of Asian civilization. All these speak of her invaluable and awesome learning and talent as a woman of letters and teacher of literature.

Gawad Pedro Bucaneg

During the last quarter of a century, LIRA has given, and become, tangible proof to the importance of mentoring and guidance using native poetics in developing young Filipino poets. It has become a model workshop for forming Filipino esthetics, which will provide dependable guideposts in the complex development of poetic consciousness among the young writers whom LIRA afforded the opportunity for growth through continuous support, intensive discussion and workshop of works, and the sharing of the knowledge of metaphor and love for poetry.
