Katext Mo sa Katotohanan week two winners

The Filipinas Institute of Translation, Inc. (FIT) announces the second week winners of “Katext Mo Sa Katotohanan” (Your Text Mate For Truth) text poetry writing contest.

Chaired by National Artist for Literature Virgilio S. Almario, the judges who include Vim Nadera, and Joey Baquiran chose the Gervacio poem for its amusing yet rueful take on the widespread Filipino practice of buying pirated and cloned products.

Payreted ang dvd ko,
iPhone ay gawa ng Tsino;
pero maniwala kayo,
hanap pa rin ay totoo.
-German Gervacio

By using the sms vocabulary, acrostics, and most of all humor, the other winning poems evade the didactic tendencies of most of the entries. By doing so, these texting poets are modernizing the traditional and strict mode of the dalit (quatrain of monorhyming eight syllabic lines).

May A-B-Z-T-E-F-G
Sa alpabeto ni Neri,
Walang I-O-U-P-S-G
Kung RP sa ‘yo’y 1-4-3.
-Mario C. Lamar

N-apakasinungaling mo
E-hemplo ka ng demonyo
R-imarim kami sa iyo
I-siwalat ang totoo.
-Tata Raul Funilas

Bata ni Ma’m iwas-pusoy;
Bakit takot sa Senado?
Matulad ba kay Pinokyo
At humaba rin ang ilong?
-Fernando Gonzalez

Di bubukol kung di ukol.
Pero ang mga komisyon
Sa kontrata’y bumubukol
Sa bulsa ng mga baboy.
-Alexander Martin Remollino

Thousands of texters sent entries via sms cellphone technology from as far away as Hongkong and Guam. Hundreds more opted to use the email.

FIT encourages more texters to join this contest which has a very contemporary theme—the value of telling the truth. Non-winning entries from previous weeks do not qualify anymore for consideration for the current week. The contest skips the Holy Week and will resume by March 24 until April 4, 2008.

Contestants can text their poems at 0915-7832810. Or email them at dalitext@yahoo.com. Poems must strictly follow the dalit rhyme and meter. Cut-off time is at 5pm every Friday. Haiku is a form of poetry that developed in Japan from about 400 years ago. It is a short verse of 17 syllables, divided into units of five, seven, and five syllables. Pinoy haiku has 19 syllables divided into units of three lines having seven, five, and seven syllables each. This fixed-form with rhyming the first and the last lines is ideal for Filipino poetic tradition considering its similarity to tanaga and ambahan in versification.

Katext Mo Sa Katotohanan first week winners

The Filipinas Institute of Translation, Inc. (FIT) announces the first week winners of “Katext Mo Sa Katotohanan” (Your Text Mate For Truth) text poetry writing contest.

Chaired by National Artist for Literature Virgilio S. Almario, the judges who include Vim Nadera, Joey Baquiran, and Ronald Atilano chose the top poem for its folksy wit and popular allusion that make its social commentary resonate intimately with recent events. This dalit poem deploys cultural tradition to put the tumultuous present in a critical yet hopeful light.

Noon ay bulag na pinya
Ang burukratang Lozada
At nang imulat ang mata
Pati madla’y nakakita.
- Danilo dela Cruz

The consolation prize winning poems were no less sharp and disproving of the corrupt practices of those who wield power. Expressed in tongue-in-cheek humor, truth telling is deemed most important to achieve personal peace and social stability.

Ang magsabi ng totoo
Ay kalaban ng demonyo;
Ang sinungaling na tao
Ay may gloria sa imp’yerno.
- Abdon ”Jun” Balde

Huwag magtago sa saya
Neri, maging totoo ka.
Kakampi ba kay Lozada
O magsusuot ng Prada?
- Frank Rivera

Kuwago sa kampanaryong
Nakadapo sa pulpito,
May diskurso sa kumbentong
Sasama ba si Obispo?
- ”Tata” Raul Funilas

Dear wala akong sikreto.
Tingnan mo pa ang selpon ko.
Naka-save dya’y puro text mo.
‘Wag lang buksan ang inbox 2.
- Adjani Arumpac

Katext Mo Sa Katotohanan poetry contest

The Filipinas Institute of Translation, Inc. (FIT) launches “Katext Mo Sa Katotohanan” (Your Text Mate For Truth), a dalit poetry writing contest through the popular SMS/text messaging. FIT has sponsored similar contests in the past using other indigenous literary forms like the tanaga and diona.

Dalit is a traditional poetic form consisting of four mono-rhyming lines of eight syllables each. It is highly metaphorical and conveys an insight on human life and experience. Here is an example:

Ang sugat ay kung tinanggap
Di daramdamin ang antak
Ang aayaw at di mayag
Galos lamang magnanaknak.
(When one submits himself to wounding,
The intensest pain is bearable;
When one is unwilling,
Even the merest scratch can fester)

Writers and poetry enthusiasts can join the contest which has a very contemporary theme—the value of telling the truth. Writing poems is an effective way of expressing communal feelings and at this time in our national life, communal action.

Ang tunay na Filipino
Nagsasabi ng totoo
Naglilingkod sa totoo
Ilalaban ang totoo.
- Rio Alma

Rica Bolipata-Santos wins Madrigal-Gonzalez Best First Book Award 2007
by Arvin Abejo Mangohig

Rica Bolipata-Santos' Love, Desire, Children, Etc.: Reflections of a Young Wife won this year's Madrigal-Gonzalez Best First Book Award. Published in 2005 by Milflores Publishing, Inc., the book is a collection of essays which Dr. Neil Garcia praised for its "candor, grace and humor."

At ceremonies held at the UP Diliman Bulwagang Rizal last December 8, Garcia announced the winner, who was congratulated by UP ICW Director Vim Nadera and Atty. Gizela Gonzalez-Montinola. Bolipata-Santos received a P50,000 check and certificate. She delivered a short acceptance speech as her children rejoiced at her success, her youngest son joining her onstage and bowing like a performer, further endearing them to the audience. She described herself as a "closet writer," talked about the sheer joy of writing as her hand moves across the page, and described her delight when Antonio Hidalgo of Milflores said he was extremely interested in publishing Love .

The award is the only such prize that recognizes literary debuts of Filipino writers and was established in memory of Gonzalo Gonzalez. Previous winners are Elena Sicat, Luna Sicat-Cleto, F.H. Batacan, Sarg Lacuesta, Vince Groyon and Kristian Cordero. This year's panel of judges was composed of Garcia, Jaime An-Lim and previous winner Vince Groyon.

Below is the transcript from Garcia's presentation of the winner and other nominees:

The six finalists for this year's Madrigal-Gonzalez Best First Book Award are:

First, Salamanca , a novel by Dean Alfar. This is the only avowed book of fiction to make it to the short list in what has turned out to be the year of creative nonfiction. A verbal conjuration of the magical realist sort, Salamanca is a campy verbal adventure written in Alfar's trademark rambunctious and irreverent prose. In typical postmodernist fashion, this fabulation's impressively scintillant surface-its medium-is quite possibly already the innermost depth of its message.

Second, Barbara-Ann Gamboa Lewis's Barefoot in Fire: A World War II Childhood . This charmingly illustrated, book-length memoir reads like a compelling little novel, whose narrative carefully imparts to the reader a sense of its precocious narrator's unfolding life-a life that is by turns impressionable and courageous, vulnerable and steadfast, reckless and prudent. Like other memorable books of the same genre, Lewis's Barefoot in Fire is an eloquent indictment of the utter evil of war, as well as a moving study of the indomitable human spirit.

Third, Science Solitaire: Essays on Science, Nature, and Becoming Human by Maria Isabel Garcia. This book, possibly the first of its kind in the history of Philippine literary publishing, is an interesting collection of nonfiction essays about science, written in a generous and accessible language. In essay after essay, the author strikes the reader as being at once a naturalist and a philosopher-a student of creation, who intimately participates in the very thing that she observes, and who seeks, in the world's tangible and mutable forms, the harmony and meaningfulness that affirm our deepest sense of being.

Fourth, Kapwa: the Self in the Other by Katrin De Guia. This beautifully produced and capaciously heavy book emerged out of the multi-talented author's dissertation in Filipino Psychology. A singular achievement in intelligent fellow-feeling and scholarly sympathy, De Guia's Kapwa is at once an academic inquiry into the Filipino concepts and rituals of the shared inner self, as well as an intricate interweaving of six, richly textured biographical essays on culture-bearing Filipino artists, whose complex worldviews and lifeways the author painstakingly and passionately brings to light.

Fifth, Helen T. Yap's From Inside the Berlin Wall. A series of letters to her family back in the Philippines, Yap's book traces a narrative arc that articulates the "Pinoy abroad" perspective in a way that is remarkably different from the garden variety travelogue, probably because the author actually resided rather than merely toured in the strange and estranging landscape of East Germany, right before the end of the Cold War. This experience afforded Yap the time to piece together her book's fragmentary but finally singular vision-that of a temporary Filipino exile's haunting and haunted inner world.

And finally, the sixth finalist and this year's winner of the coveted Madrigal-Gonzalez Best First Book Award is.

Love, Desire, Children, Etc.: Reflections of a Young Wife by Rica Bolipata-Santos. Published in 2005 by Milflores Publishing, Inc., Bolipata-Santos's first book is a rewarding collection of thirteen thematically unified essays that addresses with uncommon candor, grace, and humor some of life's more mundane realities and mysteries: love and desire, marriage and children, family and friends, teaching and writing. The author treads the uneven terrain of the quotidian with an open compass, unafraid to confront and scrutinize even her own intimate fears and insecurities and confusions. Again and again, in these luminous little personal narratives, what triumphs is a clear-eyed self-understanding, which is utterly convincing because it is earned at the cost of so much soul-searching and inner struggle. In these provocative and well-shaped essays, Bolipata-Santos (following the words of Peter Walsh from Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway ) has taken hold of fragments of her public and private life and turned them round, slowly, in the light, to discover designs that are finally comprehensible, startling, consoling, and wise.

A deeply celebratory book worthy of the Madrigal-Gonzales Best First Book Award.

Congratulations to all author-finalists, and congratulations to our winner, Rica Bolipata-Santos.

UPV-CWP alumni reap Gawad Komisyon honors

Two of the alumni of the UPV Creative Writing Program, Voltaire Oyzon and Dominador Pagliawan, won first prize and third prize, respectively, for this year's Gawad Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino Patimpalak sa Panulat, Waray poetry category.

With the theme, “Maraming Wika, Matatag na Bansa,” Mr. Oyzon's entry was An Maupay ha mga Waray ug Iba pa nga Siday while Mr. Pagliawan's was Pamasyada ha Cebu.

For decades, Filipinos have become used to the idea of "Isang Bansa, Isang Wika," but recent studies have emerged, pointing to its political incorrectness. Acknowledging the significance of other languages, the contest opportunely opens writing about the diversity of language, culture and ethnic identity.

“I chose to write in my beloved Waray language because I simply cannot afford to forget,” Mr. Oyzon said. “Forgetting is a form of death. I cannot afford my language to die. If the Waray language dies, it is tantamount to saying that the Waray people never existed at all.”

In line with the Buwan ng Wika celebration, the Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino (KWF) laid down its project, the Gawad Komisyon 2007, which supports the state policy of promoting the right of citizens to affordable quality education and the enrichment of country's historical and cultural heritage based on Republic Act 7722 or the "Higher Education Act of 1994."

Meanwhile, Prof. Merlie Alunan, the program director of the UPV-CWP and a six-time Palanca awardee, placed second in the Gawad Komisyon 2007 for poetry in Cebuano with her entry Witik-witik sa Hangin ug Ubang Balak.

Established as a grand proposal by Prof. Alunan in 2000 during UPV Chancellor Ida Siason's term, the UPV Creative Writing Center has for seven years now spurred the growth of literature in the Visayan languages, pushing these languages from the margins into the mainstream consciousness of the Filipinos.

The creative writing workshops provide a venue for Visayan literary artists to write in the local language and encourage study on the southern literary tradition, hence making UPV a center of excellence in the area of culture and the languages, and ultimately contributing to national cultural development.

In his speech at the September awarding, Mr. Oyzon asserted, “I will continue writing in my beloved Waray because it is my only connection with the past and the future. Waray identity, or any cultural identity for that matter, is a summation of all its people's memory. For language is a repository of a people's memory. And it is only through memory that the past, the present and the future can be together. Forgetting in the form of neglect fragments the national memory. Loss of our national memory is fragmentation of our country. A lost memory lasts forever. I chose to write in my beloved Waray and will continue writing in my beloved Waray for I cannot afford to forget.”

The awarding ceremony was held last August 31 at the Bayview Park Hotel, Manila.

The poems of Nierva and Borlagdan are quiet and serene observations of things and images that are found in Bikol.

The board of judges declared no grand prize winner in the fiction category. However, Marissa Reorizo-Casillan's "Abaniko" was declared as honorable mention. There were only two finalists in the fiction category.

This year's grand prize winner for the essay category is Judith Balares-Salamat's "Ringgaw nin Imahinasyon, Kawat sa Pagtukdo (Creativity of Imagination, Fun in Teaching)" which also won for the writer the prestigious Parasurat kan Taon (Writer of the Year). Youth essay writing contest

Theme: Engaging Youth in Reform

Young people can be a powerful force for change! As future reformers, young people (18-30) have innovative ideas on how to solve the political, economic, and social problems facing their countries. However, they often lack the voice to bring these ideas to policymakers. Simply, young people are often regarded as recipients of reforms, not active participants in the reform process.

CIPE’s essay contest gives you the opportunity to share your ideas about citizenship, democratic and market-oriented reform, youth leadership, and the ways that your country can create avenues for youth to participate in the political and economic spheres. We encourage you to get thinking, get involved, and use your own experiences to develop concrete solutions to these development issues.

A $1,000 honorarium will be given for each winning essay.

Guidelines

Eligibility

Open to students and young professionals aged 18-30.
Special weight will be given to essays submitted by citizens of non-OECD countries.

Topic Categories

Citizenship in a Democratic Society

What needs to be done to develop a sense of citizenship in young people and help them find their role in a democratic society?

True reform occurs only when citizens actively participate in the governance process – it can’t be achieved by street protests alone. Young people are an integral part of society and their input and participation in their countries’ governance is necessary to effect political and economic reform.

However, many lack the skills and opportunity to communicate with policymakers and get involved in their country’s development. Youth are often disengaged from the political process and rarely develop the sense of citizenship that is so crucial to building an inclusive, participatory democracy. To become active citizens in their countries, young people must have the skills to develop their ideas on reform and outlets to express those ideas in a constructive manner. What does citizenship mean to you? How are citizenship and good governance connected? How can your country engage and enable young people to participate constructively in the governance process? Be sure to begin your essay by describing the situation in your country.

Educational Reform and Employment Opportunities

How can your country reform the educational system to give young people the right skills and opportunities to enter the workforce?

In many countries, the youth unemployment rate is very high. In some countries, this is caused by a lack of jobs. However, in many others, young people entering the workforce are not prepared for the jobs available – they lack the necessary skills and education. Unable to find good jobs, they face a difficult choice: remain unemployed or accept low-paying jobs with no opportunity for advancement. Improving the educational systems of many countries is a key step towards creating a generation of young people who possess the skills and knowledge to participate in the economy, locally and globally. What are the major employment problems young people face in your country? What can be done to give them the right skills and opportunities to enter the workforce? Who should taking the lead in doing so? Be sure to begin your essay by describing the situation in your country.

Entrepreneurship and Leadership

What needs to be done in your country to provide youth with the opportunity to become entrepreneurs and/or leaders in their communities?

Young people can play a positive role in the political and economic spheres in their countries, on both local and national levels. Unfortunately they often lack access to the resources and groups that would help them get involved and have an impact. However, when provided with the opportunity and skills to become influential members of their communities, youth can accomplish their goals. What are the skills that young people need to acquire to start a successful business or civil society group? What are the major barriers that prevent them from opening a business or assuming a leadership position in your country? What programs or policies would give youth the skills to become active and influential members of society? Be sure to begin your essay by describing the situation in your country.

Top Essays

In each category, a first, second, and third place winner will be chosen by a panel of CIPE staff and international partners. The three winning essays from each category will be published as Economic Reform Feature Service articles. CIPE will provide each of the nine winners an honorarium of $1,000.

Other essays of merit will be considered for publication as well. CIPE may translate certain articles into other languages, including Arabic, Russian, Spanish, or French.

Judging Criteria

Essays will be judged on clarity, originality, and their contribution to the understanding of development issues facing countries. The logic of the ideas expressed is more important than perfect English grammar.

Judges: Essays will be evaluated by a panel of judges comprising CIPE staff and CIPE’s international partners.

About CIPE

The Center for International Private Enterprise is a non-profit affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and one of the four core institutes of the National Endowment for Democracy. CIPE has supported more than 1,000 local initiatives in over 100 developing countries, involving the private sector in policy advocacy and institutional reform, improving governance, and building understanding of market-based democratic systems.

CIPE maintains that countries need to build market-oriented and democratic institutions simultaneously, as they are essentially two sides of the same coin. Without a functioning market system, democracies will remain weak. Likewise, without a democratic process, economic reforms are unlikely to succeed.

Formatting Guidelines

  1. All essays must be written in English.
  2. All essays must be original and unpublished.
  3. Word count: 2,000-4,000.
  4. Indicate the essay’s category on the cover page.
  5. Provide full contact info on the cover page, including citizenship.

Timeframe: All essays must be submitted by May 31, 2007.

How to Submit

E-mail a copy of the essay as a .pdf file or MS Word document to essay@cipe.org. An e-mail will be sent confirming receipt of the submission.

Bikolano poet wins Best First Book award
by Arvin Abejo Mangohig

By the time Kristian Cordero’s name was announced as 2006 Madrigal-Gonzalez Best First Book Award winner, everyone at the Claro M. Recto Hall knew that the awarding was to be an event of many firsts. It was the first time a volume of poetry won. It was the first time a trilingual book won. It was the first time a book published by a small press won.

It was also the first time the winner was not known beforehand. Instead, the UP Institute of Creative Writing gathered together the five nominees whose first books were shortlisted by the panel of judges. Cordero, Manolito Sulit, Allan Derain, Jimmuel C. Naval and Jaime Dasca Doble participated in the forum “Breaking into Print.” Each author related how his first book took form. Sulit was wryly comedic; Derain emphasized the importance of learning, Naval felt belatedness and elation and Doble discussed nominative integrity, truthfulness to one’s self.

But it was Cordero’s sincere portrayal of writing his poems amidst the destruction of Bikol that won over the audience which included National Artists for Literature Virgilio Almario and Bienvenido Lumbera and ICW Associates J. Neil Garcia, Lilia Quindoza Santiago and Charlson Ong. A hush fell over the Recto Hall as Cordero related moments of creativity in the face of the storm battering the region. Mga Tulang Tulala: Piling Tula sa Filipino, Bikol at Rinconada, then, is a testament not only to the emerging success of Bikol literature but also to the artist’s ability to triumph over the external life in the face of the most heart-wrenching of circumstances.

This year’s panel of judges consisted of Rene Villanueva, Malou Jacob and Luna Sicat Cleto, herself a winner of the Best First Book Award in 2004. The first ever winner, Sarg Lacuesta also gamely participated in the forum, observing that the award somehow shortened the gestation period for his second book. ICW Director Vim Nadera and Likhaan Foundation treasurer Linda Panlilio were on hand to award the P50,000 check to the pleasantly stunned Cordero. Lumbera read the Madrigal-Gonzalez family’s congratulatory message.

The unanimous decision of the 2006 judges bodes well for Bikol literature and writing from the regions in general. The Madrigal-Gonzalez Best First Book Award and its like are essential to the renaissance of Philippine literatures. A little fame and a little fortune are nice but recognition and respect are what artists deserve. As Lacuesta seriously joked, a Best Second Book Award was not such a bad idea at all.

HUMAN RIGHTS AND POVERTY
Writing Contest for International Human Rights Day 2006 for Children and Youth (8-18 years old)

Guidelines and Contest Rules

Background

More than one in six people in the world live in poverty – that is, on less than $1 per day. But poverty is not only about having no money. It is also about not having the materials and resources to fulfill a person’s basic needs – it is about human rights.
Human Rights Day 2006 will focus on fighting poverty as a matter of obligation, not of charity.
Poverty is frequently a consequence as well as a cause of human rights abuses. Without access to such things as employment, basic healthcare, education and essentials like food, clothing and water, many poor people lack the means to change their lives for the better and are condemned to live a life of poverty.
Discrimination on the basis of race, religion, gender or other reasons can prevent people from gaining adequate access to services and to participate in the political process in their country.
Although standards of living vary greatly among nations and within nations, the effects of poverty and denial of basic human rights remain constant: hunger, homelessness, little or no education and lack of basic resources.

Eligibility

To enter the Human Rights and Poverty writing competition you must:

1) be between the ages of 8 – 18;
2) send your entry by e-mail (see instructions below).

Topics

Poverty is frequently a consequence as well as a cause of human rights abuses. Choose one of the following two topics to write about:

1. Pick one article from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and use an example from real-life to illustrate how the violation of this right is a consequence of living in poverty. Include any suggestions you may have on how poverty can be reduced so that this right is not violated; Or,

2.Pick one article from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and use an example from real-life to illustrate how the violation of this right can cause poverty. Include any suggestions you may have on what can be done to protect this right so that it does not lead to poverty.
Entries should be one page only (maximum 800 words).
Entries can be written in English, French, Spanish, Russian, Chinese or Arabic. Articles not written in one of these languages will not be judged.

Evaluation of Entries

Entries will be judged on:

• writing style
• originality
• how well you answered the question listed above

Three winning entries will be chosen from each of the following regions:
1) Latin America and the Caribbean,
2) Arab States,
3) Asia and the Pacific,
4) North America,

Joel Toledo won 2nd place in the Bridport Prize, a contest for poetry and short story writing. His poem “The Same Old Figurative,” a sinuous lyrical meditation, impressed poetry judge Lavinia Greenlaw and earned him 1,000 British pounds (over Php 94,000).

There will be time to explore all aspects of the festival - films, art exhibitions, panel discussions, Q&A sessions and debates.

"Lobat" is Word of the Year

"Lobat" is declared word of the year during the Sawikaan 2006: Pambansang Kumperensiya sa Salita ng Taon, an annual language
conference sponsored by the Filipinas Institute of Translation, National Commission for Culture and the Arts, and the Blas F. Ople Foundation.

Sawikaan 2006 looked at the development of Filipino as a national language and focuses on new words or phrases that were popular in the local socio-cultural scene in the preceding year.

An article by Ateneo professor Jelson E. Capilos, "lobat" is chosen by the the conference participants as one of the five finalists that included "botox," "toxic," "spa," and "orocan." The first runner up is "botox" by Dr. Luis Gatmaitan and second is "toxic" by UP instructor Michael Andrada.

"Lobat" made it as top choice because of its interesting and relevant review of literature, clear presentation, and the startling conclusion that Filipinos nowadays are much like the cellular phones—the ubiquitous machines that symbolize modernity—that rely so much on the mini batteries that discharges energy in no time. Filipinos go "lobat" because of personal, social, and global pressures.

"Botox," a brand name of a toxin injected into faces to erase wrinkles, easily made it as second choice, being popular among many beauty conscious Filipinos who can afford the expensive treatment.

"Toxic" refers to periods when operators in call centers receive excessive number of calls. Or it can be used as a tag to any irksome person, thing, or experience.

"Spa" of course is what you need when things go "lobat" or "toxic." "Orocan," a plastic product brand, refers to
hypocrites and liars.

The Manila Ladies Branch of the International Wine and Food Society (IWFS) announces the start of The Doreen Gamboa Fernandez Food Writing Award 2006. On this fifth year of the competition, the theme is Filipino native cake or kakanin , its generic name.

The announcement was made at the opening Monday of the Heritage Food Festival of Ilonggo cuisine at the Mandarin Oriental Manila. It was an excellent opportunity because the Filipino Heritage Festival, Inc. is a sponsor and partner of the Food Writing Award starting this year. Both the Manila Ladies Branch and the Filipino Heritage Festival are working towards the same goal-that of promoting our Filipino culture.

Through the DGF Food Writing Award, the Manila Ladies are cultivating a significant body of literature about Philippine culinary culture. The latest compilation of this is in the book Slow Food: Philippine Culinary Traditions launched last year at a major event of the Branch.

Those who wish to join must write an essay on the native cakes that use rice and other grains like corn and millet, rootcrops (e.g. cassava, kamote ) and fruit (e.g. saba ). Kakanin comes in many forms--cylindrical like the suman , shaped like squares, rectangles or triangles, rounded like some puto .

The essay must be in English, not less than 4,500 characters nor more than 5,000 characters or 800 words, printed on two pages of bond paper, double-spaced.

All entries must use a pen name. Accompany the essay with a separate envelope containing the Author's Information Sheet revealing your (1) name; (2) pen name; (3) residential address and telephone number; (4) business address and telephone number, if you work; (5) cell phone number.

Deadline for submission is August 31, 2006. Submit the printed entry together with a digital copy (Word file or rtf-rich text format on a floppy disk or CD) and the Author's Information Sheet to:

Subject Matter: FILIPINO NATIVE CAKES/ KAKANIN

Kakanin is the generic name for Filipino native cakes. While the word indicates rice or kanin as the basic ingredient, it can also mean cakes that use rootcrops (e.g. cassava, kamote ), fruit (e.g. saba ) and other grains (corn, millet).

Kakanin can be in many forms-cylindrical like the suman , shaped like squares, rectangles or triangles, rounded like some puto .

Entries must contain the descriptions of shape, color, ingredients, packaging, manner of cooking and taste. Research on origins, citing essays from other writings on the subject and interviews with kakanin specialists earn additional points.

Important: Cakes and pastries made out of wheat or corn flour are not allowed.

Some examples of kakanin :

The tinubong of Vigan is puto mixture poured into long bamboo tubes and left to cook on coals.

Cebuanos love their putomaya , suman bodbod nd biko , all made of sweetened malagkit as well as the bibingka .

Pampangos make their Christmas week specialties like putong sulot and putong lusong .

Bacolod has its Manapla puto that needs the saba banana leaf for its lining.

Sapin sapin in Bulacan are layers of creamy exquisite tasting rice flour mixed with coconut milk.
