Call for papers for Theorizing Asian American Fiction
Upcoming Special Issue: Theorizing Asian American Fiction
Guest Editors: Stephen Hong Sohn, Paul Lai, and Donald C. Goellnicht
Deadline for Submission: 30 January 2009
The topic of this special issue of MFS stems from the exponential growth in Asian American literary production over the past few decades and the ongoing need to understand how these texts function within the framework of ethnic and Asian American Studies. This issue seeks to account for and further the important changes that have taken place in the last decade since Susan Koshy (1996) observed that Asian American literary studies “has been weak in theoretical work,” especially in its assumptions of a coherent body of texts defined by the ethnicities of the authors.
More recently, Colleen Lye (2007) argues that scholars continually problematize the discursive production of Asian America without asking why we continue to lean on “Asian America” as an organizing principle for literary study. Her project instead offers: “the sense of the theoretical generativity of speaking not of identity but of form, of trying to investigate race and nation through the relationship between aesthetic and social modalities of form.” While Lye’s project usefully focuses on literary and narrative forms of Asia, its attempts to distance the formation of a textual coalition from authorial bodies drifts somewhat from other Asian American literary studies’ political project of recognizing and revaluing Asian American authors’ work.
Is there a way to privilege the identities of authors even while focusing on form in defining a tradition of fiction? If existing rubrics of Asian American literature problematically collect texts under the eye of biology, what other ways might Asian Americanists approach, categorize, and consider their objects of study? For example, how does thinking of Asian American literature as a “subjectless discourse,” as Kandice Chuh (2003) has espoused, enable new representational and taxonomic configurations to emerge? If a panethnic, nationally-determined category of persons is insufficient for defining a textual body, how might interrogating the geopolitical boundaries of the field look in turning more directly to Asian North American or Anglophone Asian fictions without simply adding more racialized bodies to the fold?
To address these questions, MFS solicits articles that have broad implications for theorizing Asian American fiction as a whole while paying attention to specific texts. Papers might investigate: how the field must be reconstructed or redefined through discursive intersectionalities with queer studies, gender studies, class critique, post-ethnicity/post-race critical theory, area studies, diaspora, transnationalism, globalization, and/or postcolonialism; authors and texts that arguably fall out of disciplinary boundaries and/or authors and texts that have spawned debates within the field (e.g. Ha Jin’s Waiting, Chang-rae Lee’s Aloft, and Lois-Ann Yamanaka’s Blu’s Hanging); canon formation in Asian American literary studies and its East Asian focus; how the field can read contemporary texts alongside earlier ones; poststructuralist and postmodern discourses which de-stabilize essentialist Asian American literary definitions (”real vs. fake”); conceptions of ethnic/racial heritage and mixed-race bodies within Asian American literature; the possibilities for claiming as Asian American literature the work of non-Asian American writers (e.g. David Guterson’s Snow Falling on Cedars, Deborah Iida’s Middle Son); regionalism in Asian American literature (South Asia/East Asia/Southeast Asia/Pacific Islands, regional differences within the US and Canada, connections across the Americas); nationalism as a continuing organizing principle in Asian American (including or excluding Asian Canadian?) fiction; the (re)turn to aesthetics, genre, and form and/as politics; or how Asian American literature is defined outside academic criticism (e.g. in publishing and marketing discourses).
Essays should be limited to 9,000 words, including all quotations and bibliographic references, and should follow the MLA Style Manual for internal citation and Works Cited. Please submit two copies of your essay to The Editors, Mfs, Department of English, Purdue University, 500 Oval Drive, West Lafayette, IN 47907-2038.
Queries should be directed to Paul Lai (plai2@stthomas.edu).

Call for submissions for Coming Soon
Coming Soon, an anthology of erotic poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction on the loss of virginity. The piece must specifically address a first (human, as opposed to something like bestial) sexual experience.
What we are looking for are pieces that depict an initiation into the sexual act, therefore we will not consider works that try to be coy: for instance, please don't send a piece on how some character/persona discovers there is such a thing as fornication, yet doesn't engage in it. We'd consider that a cop-out. Neither are we looking for pieces on, er, giving one's self sexual pleasure. No, no, no. Works submitted should involve at least two conscious people (no corpses, please!), with an exchange of bodily fluids or whatnot. (If there is no exchange of bodily fluids, the work should address the question: But why the heck not?)
Open to Philippine writers in English and Filipino. Past published works are welcome as long as they have not yet appeared in an anthology.
Deadline: 31 January 2008.
Editors: Conchitina Cruz, Edgar Samar and Katrina Tuvera.
Please send submissions as MSWord documents to comingsoonantho@gmail.com. On the subject line of your e-mail, please indicate your genre (poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction) and language (English/Filipino).
Multiple submissions are welcome, but each entry must be sent seperately. Inquiries should be sent to the same e-mail address.

Call for submissions for CFP: The Commons
The editors of Currents in Electronic Literacy (an MLA-indexed, peer-reviewed, e-journal) seek manuscripts that address the role or the relevance of the cultural commons for those working, teaching, or living in a mediated age. The term itself has received attention from those on the far left, such as Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri, to those defending free-market economics, such as Lawrence Lessig. As new media enable us to collaborate, share information, disseminate texts, and pull from the collective and creative resources that the humanities have traditionally celebrated, we face new challenges on a variety of fronts. What are the legal implications of sharing copyrighted (or copylefted texts)? What constitutes "fair use" in an age when most cultural artifacts can quickly be scanned and posted for public consumption? (How) are we ethically and scholastically obligated to evaluate or cite sources that have been read and reviewed by a worldwide community of arguably critical and invested readers? (How) do profit (or exploitation) work when users determine content willfully and energetically?
We encourage submission of scholarly articles and review essays (including reviews of books, software, websites, and conferences) that relate any of the above questions or others not mentioned to the task of teaching and studying literacy.
Submissions for reviews should be approximately 1500 words for individual reviews and 2500 for omnibus reviews of multiple texts or applications and 5000 words for scholarly articles. Submission deadline is December 15, 2007. For questions or to submit reviews email ejournal@lists.cwrl.utexas.edu.
Currents in Electronic Literacy is an online publication of the Computer Writing and Research Laboratory at the University of Texas, Austin. Currents strives to provide a forum for the scholarly discussion of issues pertaining to electronic literacy, widely construed. In general, Currents publishes work addressing the use of electronic texts and technologies for reading, writing, teaching, and learning in fields including but not restricted to the following: literature (in English and in other languages), rhetoric and composition, languages (English, foreign, and ESL), communications, media studies, and education.
Currents in Electronic Literacy (ISSN 1524-6493) is indexed in the MLA International Bibliography and EBSCO.

Call for Submissions: Growing Up Filipino II
This is a call for submissions of short stories for an anthology tentatively titled, Growing Up Filipino II - Stories for Young Adults. The book will be edited by Cecilia Manguerra Brainard and will be published by both Anvil and PALH. Contributors will receive copies of the book as compensation for the use of their work.
The manuscript should be approximately 8-10 pages long, typed, double-spaced (approximately 1,800-2,300 words). This should be emailed to CBrainard@aol.com. You may also send it by air mail to:
Cecilia Brainard
c/o PALH
PO Box 5099
Santa Monica, CA 90409
USA
This book project is a follow-up of an earlier short story collection entitled Growing Up Filipino: Stories for Young Adults (published by PALH 2002, and Anvil). The following review describes the 2002 collection:
From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up-These 29 short stories offer a highly textured portrait of Filipino youth and an excellent sampling of creative writing. Thematically arranged, most of the pieces have been written since the turn of the 21st century. Each story is introduced by a thumbnail sketch of the author and a paragraph or two about some element of Filipino culture or history that is relevant to the story. Authors include those born and continuing to live in the Philippines, emigres, and American-born Filipinos. Tough but relevant topics addressed include a gay youth's affection for his supportive mother, the role of religious didacticism in the formation of a childhood perception, consumer culture as it is experienced by modern teens in Manila, and coping with bullies of all ages and stations in life. … The high caliber and broad but wholly accessible range of this collection, however, makes this title a solid purchase for multiple reasons.
The 29 stories in the 2002 edition of Growing Up Filipino were written before 9/11 (September 11, 2001). The editor would now like to collect a second volume that continues to address the young adult audience. The stories in the collection will still be about the Filipino experience in the Philippines or any part of the world. But in this second volume, the editor is seeing contemporary stories, or post 9/11 stories. The editor is seeking the best stories about growing up Filipino. The editor is not looking for stories written by young adults, but about Filipino young adults. The editor envisions the stories dealing with relationships, family, falling in love perhaps, and other issues that the young adults deal with. Character-driven stories are encouraged. Those interested in submitting are encouraged to read the first volume of Growing Up Filipino: Stories for Young Adults, to get an idea of the kind of stories the editor is looking for.
Deadline for submission has been extended. Please send your bio (approx. 150 words) in people-friendly narrative form. Make sure your contact information is included with the story.
ABOUT THE EDITOR: Cecilia Manguerra Brainard is the author/editor of over a dozen books. She has a website at www.ceciliabrainard.com and a blog at cbrainard.blogspot.com

Call for Submissions for Corpus
Desire is powerful. What is forbidden is powerful. Desire between men is often forbidden. Desire between men is powerful.
Corpus is a journal from the AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA) which uses art, cultural criticism, poetry, short stories and humor to reveal the challenges of HIV prevention in gay and bisexual communities.
The theme of its 7th issue, due for publication in mid-2008, is "Desire Between Men: Voces Mundial". This issue of Corpus seeks to provide a space for a range of both established and new artists to speak about or illustrate desire between men. As gay men in Western countries have published widely, the focus for this issue is on global voices -Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, Asia, Eastern Europe and the Caribbean - voices that too rarely have an opportunity to speak with one another across geography and through a critical global means. This issue of Corpus hopes to be just such a means.
In some regions, like Latin America, HIV and AIDS provide back - or foreground for desire between men. In other regions, it is established that gay and bisexual men are vulnerable to HIV infection and need to be reached by HIV prevention services. Still in other locations, silence is being broken. A recent report showed how governments, donors, and NGOs are denying a basic set of human rights protections to same-sex practicing Africans, and how this denial impacts efforts to combat the AIDS epidemic.[1] Meanwhile, in Bangkok, while the government focused on its heterosexual epidemic, rates of infection among Thai gay men rose from 10% early this decade to more than 28% by mid-decade.
At the same time, at regional and world AIDS conferences and fora, attention to HIV infections through sex between men is increasing, resulting in events such as a pre-conference at the Toronto International AIDS Conference in 2006, and a global MSM (men who have sex with men) forum in Delhi that took place soon after. These are moments of fragile but promising global organizing around men who have sex with men and HIV, at the same time in which there has been extraordinary progress in gay rights and visibility around the world (albeit instances of violence and human rights abuses).
Corpus is looking for submissions of writing: short fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, essays, articles, or interviews; and graphic art (photography, visual art work) that addresses desire between men. It is not required to address HIV, but we are interested in the ways that HIV and AIDS affect the lives of gay and other men who have sex with men, and the way that HIV and AIDS affects our desire for each other, the evidence of both risk and resilience in our lives.
Responding to HIV is not about a condom or a poster or a pill. It is about understanding our desires, our sexual lives, how we take care of ourselves and others. Moving beyond the language of science or research, art, in the form of words or images, can play an important role in this understanding, stories of shared experiences that move us beyond statistics, a revelatory photo or phrase that brings enlightenment at the level of spirit or soul.
It would be impossible to fully represent or define desire between men in any location of the world. What is aimed for with this issue of Corpus is a snapshot of the diversity of our desires, dialogue, discussion, conversation and exchange about gay, bisexual and transgender identities in the context of a world where these identities make us vulnerable to HIV infection and where we are more aware of each other and more connected across borders and cultures.
The final deadline for submissions will be the 15 Oct 2007 but please submit or contact me beforehand.
Word length under 1,200 words is preferred, as are shorter rather than long poems. Photos and graphic art must be high resolution (300 dpi, 8.75" w x 8.75" max., CMYK tiff files): please submit up to 8 images for consideration.
Please send work as an attached electronic file(s) [either a word document or graphics files]. Include your name, title(s) of work, word length if applicable, contact details, and a biographical sketch (50 words or less). The subject line should read, "Corpus Submission."
Address all correspondence, including queries, to: andykeoquan@gmail.com
PAYMENT: $150 for your submission and 10 copies of the journal.
The publication will feature bilingual content and a print circulation of 5,000 copies. The publication will have local, U.S. national and some international distribution and will also be available in electronic form on the APLA website (www.apla.org).
If you would like to see past issues of Corpus, they can be found here.

Conversations “Over a Cup
of Ginger Tea”
The title of the book reads like
an invitation, and this is precisely what writer
Cristina Pantoja Hidalgo intends with Over
a Cup of Ginger Tea: Conversations on the Literary
Narratives of Filipino Women. Hidlago says
what she wishes to do is “start a conversation
with the reader… much as I try to do with
my students when I teach literature. I try to
interest them in stories, which for different
reasons have fascinated me all these years.”
Published by the University of
the Philippines Press, Over a Cup of Ginger
Tea is a collection of “literary essays”
in that they are about literature and written
in a style that makes reading them “as a
pleasant experience for the readers as the reading
of other types of literature.” The essays
range from the narratives of several generations
of women writers, from Maria Paz Mendoza and Edith
Tiempo to FH Batacan and Tara Sering; cover conventional
realist novels and short stories, as well as fairy
tales, chick lit, crime fiction and war memoirs.
Cristina Pantoja Hidalgo has worked
as a writer, editor and teacher in different countries
and has received many awards for both her fiction
and nonfiction. She is a professor of creative
writing and literature, and has been the coordinator
of the UP Creative Writing Program. A former director
of the UP Creative Writing Center (now the UP
Institute of Creative Writing) and director of
the UP Press, she is at present vice president
for Public Affairs of the UP System.
Over a Cup of Ginger Tea: Conversations
on the Literary Narratives of Filipino Women
is published by the UP Press and available at
Aeon Books on Katipunan Avenue, Popular Bookstore
on T. Morato, Solidaridad, Powerbooks, National
Book Store, Bound Bookshop, Fully Booked and at
the UP Press bookstores in UP Diliman, Baguio
and Davao.

Call for Submissions: WASAK!
Stories of Pinoy Transgression and Deliverance
You are not a beautiful and unique
snowflake, you are the all-singing, all-dancing
crap of the world.
Revolutions are first born in the
mind, move to the street, and then rise up like
a conflagration to burn the whole catastrophe
down.
If you feel the same way, write
with an agressive spirit and have kick ass, mind
fuck stories that burn like a firebrand, then
we want you to give us that cool narrative.
Edited by Norman Wilwayco (author
of Mondomanila) and Karl De Mesa (author
of Damaged People: Tales of the Gothic-Punk),
WASAK! Stories of Pinoy Transgression and
Deliverance tracks the same territory that
writers like Hunter S. Thompson, Irvine Welsh,
Douglas Coupland and Chuck Palanhiuk have explored
and mapped in all its brutality, dysfunction and
senseless beauty.
This is an anthology that breaks
the rules and finds personal salvation in burning
the flag of mediocrity.
REQUIREMENTS:
1) Stories must be written in
the transgressive fiction vein and must be set
in the Philippines (not necessarily Manila).
2) Stories can be either in English or Filipino.
3) Stories must clock in at not more than 30
pages (double spaced, size 11 font, on 8 and
a half by 11 paper). There is no minimum word
count.
4) Stories must be submitted in RTF format with
the subject heading: “Submission to WASAK_title
of story_name of author” to pinoytransgressive@yahoo.com
5) Include a short biography with your contact
information and a map of your immediate residence
along with the person to call in case of medical
emergency.
6) Deadline for all submissions is December
30, 2006
7) All accepted works will be paid with contributor’s
copies.
8) All accepted authors must prepare for a round
in the WASAK! fight club. If you don’t
die, we guarantee you’ll come away with
a full set of scars, bub.

Call for Submissions: Philippine
Genre Stories
We are looking for a few good stories.
Ones that catch a reader’s
attention and captivate them so much that they
lose sense of time and place in the real world
because you, the writer, have drawn them to other
times and places, ones of your own creation.
We are a small publishing firm
based in Manila, Philippines, and we hope to receive
quality stories with something about the Philippines
in them. The stories could be set somewhere on
any of the archipelago’s 7,100 islands (give
or take a few—is it high tide, or low tide?).
Or they could be set anywhere else: in another
country (real or imagined), in another time, under
the sea, in a haunted house, on a plane, on the
moon, in outer space,…but they should have
something about the Philippine culture or people
woven into them.
Don’t settle for writing
a story and then throwing in a Filipino character
or reference and then submit it to us. Don’t
put in sentences like “The man gagged but
swallowed the balut, the half-formed duck delicacy
from the Philippines. It was either that or go
hungry.” and then continue with your story,
forgetting about the Philippines the rest of the
way, forgetting even to explain why there is a
balut in the story, and then sending it to us.
Please, no. Use more skill in writing
your story than that. Anybody can do that!
This does not mean we will only
accept contributions from Filipino writers. We
are looking for good stories, Well-written ones,
in fact. As far as we know, good stories can be
told by anyone no matter who you are. Maybe you
are not from the Philippines, but your forebears
are. Or maybe you met a Filipino who made an impression
on you. Or maybe you visited the Philippines once-upon-a-time
in your life and something about someplace or
someone you encountered from here has found occupancy
in your memory.
Another thing.
We are looking for genre stories.
Fantasy, science-fiction, speculative, crime,
mystery, detective, horror, suspense. You can
write and submit a very commercial, action-packed,
plot-driven story, or a light, funny, and humorous
one, or a very moody, artsy tale packed with lyrical
prose and a lot of characterization, symbolism,
irony, and what have you. Just make sure your
story will fall into any of the above genres.
And make them good and well-written. We can’t
say that enough.
And keep the gore and sex and other
touchy stuff to a tolerable level. We know tolerance
can be relative, so we have some advice. Pretend
you have a teenaged kid. Now pretend you’re
taking him or her to a movie. You know he doesn’t
like to watch cutesy, kiddie movies anymore, and
you know you don’t want him to watch bloody
beheadings or barenaked butts and boobies. So
you scan the movie list and look for a good film,
thinking “Rated PG”, not “Rated
R” or “Rated GP”. There. There’s
one. You find the right film and that’s
the one you watch. You and your teenager are happy.
Write a story that falls under that.
We are committed to finding really
good and well-written stories (See? We mentioned
it again), but we admit that we are just a small
publishing firm with an idea (and a hope and a
prayer) to grow the readership for Philippine
genre stories. So we can’t pay much. A mere
pittance, really. Just the contributor’s
copy and eight centavos a word. That’s eight
centavos, not cents, so the conversion goes to
Philippine pesos, not dollars, okay? It’s
not much, we know, but we are willing to try out
this venture anyway, and we hope that you are
writing not just for the money but also for the
joy of writing (and seeing your name in the byline).
Who knows? If this idea works and the collections
sell well, we may be able to pay you more for
your stories in future releases. Hope is a good
thing.
Some other details: there’s
a 6,000 word ceiling but don’t go below
2,500 words. You have to be open to any advice
or editing from us. Hopefully, we can come to
an agreement to the direction your story will
take if any issues come up.
Send files only in Rich Text Format,
so we can avoid spreading those nasty viruses
that plague our world wide web; double-space your
work; and use common fonts like Courier, Arial,
Helvetica, or Times Roman.
Don’t forget the cover letter:
describe your story briefly, and describe yourself
briefly too (but don’t give us your whole
life, okay?). Let us know your contact information
(any two of the following will do: email address,
cellphone number, landline, address).
As of now we can only accept submissions
in English. Maybe that will change in the future
and we can take in work written in Filipino, but
as of now, only stories in English, please. We
also can’t acknowledge, reply, or critique
what you send in because there are only so many
hours in a day and we’re going to use those
hours to get these story collections out as fast
and as well-printed as we can, but rest assured
that if you meet our guidelines, your work will
be read and treated as objectively as possible.
If your story is chosen for publication, we’ll
be getting in touch with you, surely!
We are planning to release the
best of the stories we receive in short collections
sometime before New Year’s Day, 2007 (for
this timeline, we’re keeping our fingers
crossed, and so should you, because this will
depend on the quality of what gets sent to us).
Thanks very much for taking the
time to read this. We’re looking forward
to reading your work.
If you’re sending in a fantasy
or science-fiction story, send it to: pdofsf@yahoo.com
If you’re sending in a crime
or mystery story, send it to: pdocrmy@yahoo.com
If you’re sending in a horror
or suspense story, send it to: pdohs@yahoo.com

Writers, artists unite for Guimaras.
Check out www.saveguimaras.wordpress.com
for announcements. Feel free to post thoughts.
Copy of the petition to save guimaras is also
available.
The international community is
ignoring the Guimaras tragedy. CNN and BBC only
covered it for five days, a short attention span
for something as tragic as this. 40,000 individuals
are affected and it would take years for Guimaras
to recuperate. Therefore, like indie cinema, we
also have to go UNDERGROUND, and use online tools/digital
tools to campaign for awareness.
1. Write articles, post entries
in your blogs about Guimaras. (Share it with us
at saveguimaras.wordpress.com)
2. Write to editors of news portals
like CNN and BBC, International Herald Tribune
etc. The editors now have their own blog pages.
We will provide all these addresses in the future.
3. Filmmakers = create your own
videos, post them at youtube.com and let us know
so we can post them at our blog. Photographers,
create your album of fotos at flickr and send
us the url/rss feed.
4. Submit a statement from your
group, include photos that says, Save Guimaras.
5. Sign the Petition.
