Guniguni: The Absent Muse
Guniguni: The Absent Muse
is a community of Filipino writers and literary
enthusiasts in the Philippines and abroad and
aims to provide a forum for which literature and
writing will thrive. The group also endeavors
to provide a relaxed and neutral space where writers
can help each other in finding their voice and
improving their craft.
Founded on 19 January 2005 as an online group
by a small group of poets and writers, Guniguni:
The Absent Muse has grown to being an
independent organization with around 200 members
to date who are active both online and offline,
passionately making efforts to pour fresh ideas
into the literary and art world, exploring new
ways of defining contemporary writing.
Why The Absent Muse?
The Absent Muse is both a concept and a state
of being. It operates both within us and outside
of us. It is our imagination pushing us to create
beyond the barriers of the ordinary and then the
not-so-ordinary. It is what guides our inspiration
to tell our story and listen to countless others
in effort to call back the Muses to lead us to
a different way of expressing ourselves. While
we write about what we perceive to be what is,
we shift our perspectives to capture what is from
a different angle, using the focus of a different
eye.
One of the major outputs of the group is a literary
folio called The Absent Muse, which is
released annually.
There are several ways in which members can choose
to be active:
• Posting literary works
online for others' comments and constructive
critiquing.
• Attending the General Assemblies, wherein
members meet in person to talk about poetry,
literature and life.
• Participating in planned activities,
such as literary workshops, poetry readings
and other events.
While we are currently working
to release the 2005 folio, to date Guniguni: The
Absent Muse has undertaken several activities:
- May 2005, convened the First
Poetry Workshop (for Beginners) which was participated
by the following resource persons: Vincenzo
Serrano from ADMU, Ramil Gulle and Khavn dela
Cruz.
- 20 August 2005: Organized "indieGGo!",
which was the formal launch of Guniguni in Ciboney
Bar in Malate, with special guest Lourd de Veyra
and musical performances by Matilda, Popular
Days, Huh, Out to Lunch, Catatonic and many
others.
- 3 September 2005: Organized "unpluGGed",
poetry reading at Likha Diwa, UP, where members
and friends read poems and played music. Matilda
performed.
