Kadipan

KADIPAN (Kapisanang Aklat, Diwa at Panitik). Established on 22 Oct 1950 by students at the Manuel L. Quezon Educational Institution (later University) in Quiapo, Manila, spearheaded by Ponciano P. B. Peralta-Pineda and Tomas C. Ongoco, KADIPAN sought to promote the Filipino language, generate a vigorous Philippine literature, and expand the space allotted for the national language in campus papers. It attacked the unethical practices and the monopoly of the major magazines by their editorial staffs, and lobbied successfully for a section for young writers in Bulaklak and Liwayway.

Based in the academe, it was supported by the Filipino departments of member schools and the Institute of National Language. Its first officers were Peralta-Pineda, president; Pablo N. Bautista of the University of Santo Tomas (UST), vice-president; Pilar Paredes of the University of the Philippines (UP), secretary; Sisa Rey Centeno of the Far Eastern University (FEU), assistant secretary; Paz N. Nicasio of the Philippine Normal College, treasurer; and Teodoro A. Agoncillo, adviser. Other officers were Amelia San Jose, Leodegario Quilatan, Reynaldo R. Cruz, Hilario L. Coronel, and Rosalino Baricar. Aside from Peralta-Pineda, the past presidents of the KADIPAN include: Manuel J. Ocampo, 1953-1954; Tomas C. Ongoco, 1954-1955; Oscar Suarez Manalo, 1955-1958; Alejandrino Q. Perez and Lucila Potenciano, 1958-1959; Artemio Herrera, 1960-1961; Francisco Sigua, 1961-1962; Efren R. Abueg, 1962-1968.

From 1956 to 1968, KADIPAN held annual literary contests. The best poems, essays or stories published in the school papers were chosen. In 1965, Abueg edited an anthology of these prize-winning works entitled Mga Piling Akda ng KADIPAN (The Selected Works of KADIPAN). It featured stories, poems, and essays by Abueg, Suarez Manalo, Simplicio Bisa, Bayani M. de Leon, Rogelio Ordoñez, Clemente M. Bautista, Marcelo S. Lagmay, Domingo Landicho, Librado Azares, Demetrio M. Espino, Benruben V. Palanca, Conrado Castillo, Rogelio Sicat, J. Mario Laqui, Rolando P. Bartolome, Lorenzo B. Juachon, Rodolfo Salandanan, Orlando Rodriguez, Rogelio G. Mangahas, J. Ser Salandanan, and others.

KADIPAN also held annual poetry declamation contests and oratorical contests. Its monthly meetings were hosted by its member schools, namely, UP, FEU, UST, University of the East, Manuel L. Quezon University, as well as National University and Arellano University. Each meeting had a guest speaker. It also published a literary magazine, KADIPAN, edited by Anacleto-Dizon, Ocampo, and Peralta-Pineda. Its first issue was dated 4 Feb 1953.
