UP Writers Club
The UP Writers Club has been the University's finest literary organization since its inception in 1927. The Club has not just continually produced Philippine literary giants (7 National Artists for Literature were UPWC members namely Virgilio Almario, Edith Tiempo, Manuel Arguilla, F. Sionil Jose, NVM Gonzales, Jose Garcia Villa, Nick Joaquin) but society movers as well. The UP Writers Club is determined to live and perpetuate its legacy of literary excellence and social commitment. The Club continues to nest the next generation of writers by holding regular writing workshops, literary readings, organizing the Writers Night and other significant events in cooperation mostly with the UP Institute of Creative Writing (UP ICW), Unyon ng Manunulat sa Pilipinas (UMPIL) and the National Commission for Culture and Arts (NCAA).
The Revival
In 2002, College of Arts and Letters Dean Virgilio Almario revived the UP Writers Club (the last issue of the UPWC's Literary Apprentice before 2002 was in 1993). The Club's core members during the revival were National Writer Workshops fellows Sandra Roldan, Arvin Mangohig, Rosmon Tuazon, Adam David, Anna Sanchez, Gabby Lee and Carl Javier. In the previous years, the Club has been exclusive to winners of major awards and National Writers Workshop fellows. However UP Writers Club today believes that there are more potential literary geniuses to be unraveled. Thus, the Club reaches out to students, like you, who have the spirit and passion for words. The UP Writers Club is open to both writers in English and Filipino. Although based in UP Diliman, the Club accepts applicants from other schools. Recently, UP WC launched the Literary Apprentice 2006, the first issue in 12 years.
